I finished reading this book two weeks ago, but am just now getting around to type up my analysis of it.
Thanks again Miss Candy for sending it to me! You're the best.
This book changed my life!
He's Just Not That Into You was the combined efforts of Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo; two of the writers for Sex and the City. It apparently was started when Greg overheard Liz and some of the other female writers talking about the behavior of a guy one of the women was dating. As all the women tried to comfort her with "He's just scared of relationships" or "Your fabulous and he's never met a woman like you." Greg piped up with "Listen, it sounds like he's just not that into you."
This book is mostly written by Greg, as he goes over the different excuses we girls make for the guys we date, and he tears them down. Then he provides examples using related letters that women sent to him, and his response to each of the letters. After this, he simplifies it, and then Liz writes about why that particular thing is hard for us as women to accept. Then one or the other of them list what it really should look like, Greg produces a letter from a woman who gets it, and then an example from polling other men. It's a really interesting structure, and I found it very easy to follow and retain the information from.
The chapters are all examples of this too, they are titled things like "He's Just Not That Into You If He's Not Asking You Out" and "He's Just Not That Into You If He Only Wants To See You When He's Drunk."
Here's a quick list of the guys in my life, that were apparently just not that into me.
Matt - Said he never wanted to settle down and get married again, also said he never wanted to be monogamous. In the book, Greg even says "If they say they can't be monogamous, they can't be monogamous." Such is true with Matt. He is one of my best friends, but he wasn't that into me romantically.
These losers totally weren't worth the time and effort I put into them.
Greg even gives a basic set of rules, and encourages you to add a few of your own.
Here is my new list of dating rules!
- I will not go out with a guy who hasn't asked me out first. If he wants me, he'll come to me. I'm not chasing anyone down anymore, I deserve to be the one chased!
- No more excuses. You stand me up? We're done. You don't call? You better have a damn good reason! No more second chances, I'm not going to wait around for someone who doesn't deserve me.
- He has to date me/He gets to take me out. Take me somewhere nice and wine-and-dine me. I deserve to be wooed! (Flowers are a BIG bonus too!)
- Be cautious if he stops sleeping with me. (based more on my previous experiences) If a guy suddenly stops having sex with me as often, he's probably sleeping with someone else. (Thank you [womanizer] and The Pothead) On the same note, I wont be with anyone who makes me feel sexually unattractive.
- No more dating alcoholics or drug addicts. They've obviously got a lot of issues they need to deal with, and I don't have the time to be fixing them. I want a whole individual who loves me enough to not be in a fog for every major event in our life!
- If a guy doesn't want to get married or have kids, he's probably not for me. I want those things, so why waste my time on someone who doesn't? I will not be with a man who's afraid to talk about our future.
- No Second Chances. I will not, under any circumstances spend my precious time with any man who has already rejected me. Break up with me once, we're not getting back together.
- He disappears, I move on. I'm not going to waste anymore time wondering about guys who just stop calling or don't show up anymore. I'm just going to realize I can do better and move on!
- NEVER date married/unavailable guys. Duh, they're with someone else. If they even try, they're losers that would just do the same to me if we got serious. DUH!
- I will not be with a man who is not clearly a good, kind, and loving person. Self-explanatory.
- No sex on the first few dates. I want to be with someone who wants me for me, and not just the physical me.
If you're a single girl, I HIGHLY recommend you run and get this book now! (If you've seen the movie it doesn't count, it doesn't do it any justice. They're almost entirely different!) I loved it so much I'm going to re-read it every time I start to feel lonely or like I might settle. I'm also going to find my favorite quotes in it and hang them up in my room as daily affirmations! It was empowering, and it called me out on all of my own excuses. Seriously, go get it now!
***I did NOT receive anything for this. This review and opinion was formulated completely by me for nothing other than the fact that I LOVED this book with everything I have in me.***
YOU GO GIRL!
ReplyDeleteSeeing you go through all those men up there, I can understand why this book is so revolutionary!
I pray you find happiness in a monogamous, committed relationship!
xoxo
Great revelations!
ReplyDeleteOh boys! How they take our hearts and make us lose our minds! haha. It's good to have things in mind that we will and will NOT accept. That way we week out the dillweeds who don't deserve us.
ReplyDeleteYet... here I still secretly wait for that phone call :) Such a sucker am I.
These are amazing things to keep in mind but don't let it stop you from falling head over heals. I believe almost every guy as the ability to be all of the things you are looking for but maybe not with you. Sometimes the biggest jerk can turn in to a hopeless romantic for the right girl. And if the jerk isn't turning into that hopeless romantic, ditch him, he's not into you. And if he is it isn't enough. I think that is something to keep in mind. If you know a guys history but he is doing all the things you want him to don't let his history stop you from falling for him. But of course stay weary. I dunno. Dating is complicated. I am very proud of you getting to this point and conquering the "idea" of dating! Remember the more simple and easy it is the better. Love isn't supposed to be hard. That is why it is "falling in love" falling takes no effort and sometimes you don't realize that it is even happening.

ReplyDeleteI agree with your review. I have this book and bought it when I was single. I used to think I wouldn't meet that right person. I used to think I should live in a box, everytime a relationship went wrong or after a few dates I was starting to sense things.
ReplyDeleteThank God I have amazing friends who all used to tell me, he's out there, you just have to wait. Sometimes chasing something isn't always worth it. Sometimes you have to let things happen and fall into place on their own.
Now, I will marry my best freind in two years and I'm the happiest I've been in a very long time.
I will be honest, I credit a lot of my packaged feelings about men to that book. It really does open up your eyes and allows you to see the bigger picture.
We're all worth it!!! :)
ps. have you seen the movie!?
AMEN! :]
ReplyDeleteyeah baby! IM LIKIN THIS!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm still planning on buying it, but picking it up at Fred Meyer last week and thumbing through was a nice obvious smack upside my head (because it's ALL common sense...and sometimes I just need to see the common sense in black and white, written by someone I don't know, to truly accept it). I love these rules, and you are absolutely 100% right in have them. Thanks! :D
ReplyDeleteI love this book. It's really set my priorities straight. I know some men who've heard of the book and they hate it. They say some guys aren't like that... but I think they're just really teed off we're getting clued in to their faults, and taught not to allow men like them in our lives for a second.
ReplyDeletei didn't read the book, but that was a great movie!
ReplyDeletesounds like all those guys are right where they should be- in the past. and your dating rules are perfect. you definitely deserve to be wined and dined!
There is something for you on my blog :) :) go lookey
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your Being Brazen necklace win. It's so pretty!! So Jealous :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard this book is so great. Husband and I have been dating/married for 16 years, though, so I just don't have a reason to read it. Fun to see your analysis though.
ReplyDeleteAnd really, from the 16 years just noted above, if he's into you, you KNOW.
Happy Thursday!
It is always nice to set certain standards for oneself. It is also very important that sometimes we are hard on ourselves, but just for a brief moment, because after all we must love ourselves. Towards this I like the strong stand you are taking to set things right.
ReplyDeleteI make a general statement here: Life's biggest lessons are learned the hard way. It is a pity, but that is how it is. I have been worrying a lot these days because of the things I have done in the past, and wonder why I had to do them in the first place. If only I had applied little thought I wouldn't be losing my head over it today. Lesson learned the hard way, nevertheless a lesson is learned. I wish these new standards and rules you have set for yourself helps you to have the peace of mind and happiness you desire.
ha, your list is kind of brilliant :) It seems like a bunch of rules that should be obvious to all women...Yeah, with the emphasis on SHOULD. Because if we would follow them, we'd all be happy. There would be no drama in the world. And there's obviously a lot of drama everywhere. But you know what's good? That we learn from our mistakes
ReplyDeleteAs for the book - it just HAS to be great, since it's from SexAndTheCity writers. They're briliant :)
I am so glad to see your list, every girl needs a list!! I still have mine from before I hooked up with the hubby! I will keep it forever, it is a memory of woman who knows what she wanted and GOT IT!
ReplyDeleteThough I'm not single, I think I will still give this book a shot. I've heard a lot of great things about it. Funnily enough, I have a friend who read this book a few years ago and not long after met the guy she married.
ReplyDeleteI loved the movie. After your review, I am thinking that I need the book!
