Book Review: Left Drowning by Jessica Park

Book Review: Left Drowning by Jessica Park

Synopsis According to Goodreads

Weighted down by the loss of her parents, Blythe McGuire struggles to keep her head above water as she trudges through her last year at Matthews College. Then a chance meeting sends Blythe crashing into something she doesn’t expect—an undeniable attraction to a dark-haired senior named Chris Shepherd, whose past may be even more complicated than her own. As their relationship deepens, Chris pulls Blythe out of the stupor she’s been in since the night a fire took half her family. She begins to heal, and even, haltingly, to love this guy who helps her find new paths to pleasure and self-discovery. But as Blythe moves into calmer waters, she realizes Chris is the one still strangled by his family’s traumatic history. As dark currents threaten to pull him under, Blythe may be the only person who can keep him from drowning.

*This book is intended for mature audiences due to strong language and sexual content. Note: due to mature content recommended for Ages 17+

What I Thought of the Book

First of all, this book is a lot of smut-which I didn't really expect by the description.  Not that I necessarily have a problem with smut, but honestly the main driving factor of this book seemed to be the erotic descriptions both in interactions alone with herself and with the main male lead.  It didn't really seem to be that the book was one about their emotional baggage and healing with some sex thrown in, but more about all the sex and then the past wounds and interactions that seemed to be side-thoughts to the driving factor-which was sex.  So if you go in with that understanding, maybe it won't be so shocking for you.

Also, sometimes the sex scenes would be kind of enthralling and then they'd say something totally bizarre that pulled me entire out of it, so I wasn't very keen on this author's writing style as she just lost me about half way through some of them.  I listened to the audio book, but I'm thinking this one would have been better to read rather than listen to, as then I could have put it in my own voice and maybe not been so... Weirded out?  Yeah, I was weirded out a couple of times.

Also, it was pretty predictable.  I guessed every single plot twist before it happened, this is normal for me, but this time it just seemed too easy to guess where they the connections and turns would happen.  So this book gets three stars, the third one just because there were some great quotes that I related to or loved.  There was also some good to it, so it did have some redeemable qualities.

Book Review: Wicked by Gregory McGuire

Book Review: Wicked by Gregory McGuire

Synopsis According to Goodreads

When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?

Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.

What I Thought of the Book

Wicked has been on my to-read list for many years. I've never seen the musical, but I am very familiar with it's story and with the soundtrack, and I read Son of a Witch (the second book in this series) a very long time ago. I'm pretty sure I'll read it again now that I've read Wicked, and since it's been so long since I last did.

I have heard many mixed reviews about this book. It seems that people I know either love it, or they hate it, there isn't a lot of middle ground. Most love it, but there are a few here and there that it was unsettling for, and I can understand why after reading it. However, I quite enjoyed it.

Gregory McGuire spins a very in-depth tale filled with so many creative story lines and characters that you can't help but become enthralled from the beginning of the book. How can you not when he's built on a classic such as the Wizard of Oz and is giving you a great look at so many characters the beloved movie missed or just passed over? Don't you want to know why the Wicked Witch of the West is wicked? Or why Glinda is just so dang good? Or is she even? What about the Wicked Witch of the East? You hardly know anything about her in the Wizard of Oz because she dies right away, but how about learning about her and her real name and story? Don't you want to learn about Nessa Rose? Do you want to learn how the flying monkeys came to be? Or whether the witch ever knew love in her lifetime? Spoiler-you do.

There were so many different political things that he brings out in this story that mirror our own.  So many things related to race-instead of skin color it's type of being, though even there you find issues with skin color just as Glinda states she'd never be with Fiero because his skin is black.  Gregory McGuire must have pulled much of his inspiration from our own troubled past.

If any of these things make you curious, or if you just love the story and want to expand on it-read this book. However, I will warn you of a few things.

First, Elpheba isn't an all together lovable character. I mean you start out feeling pretty sorry for her and her circumstances, and you can understand why she'd become bitter with the way she was treated. Then you kind of fall in love with her crazy charisma and the good she tries to do for a while... Then, she kind of loses it. Eventually by the end of the book you don't really feel sorry for the fate she encounters at Dorothea's hands. Though, even that interaction isn't quite as you remember it from the original tale...

Second, if you are a person who needs to have things nice and wrapped up in tidy little bows-this book might drive you mad. Honestly, this is where the author loses a star on this book from me-so many things feel unfinished. There's no real sense of finality on so many characters and story lines. Sometimes, they just end abruptly and you don't really find out what happened. Most of the time you get a glimpse into it, but you don't get the whole story and you're left as maddeningly unknowing as Elphie is. But maybe that's the point?

Anyway, long story short, read it. I highly recommend it and I enjoyed almost every second of it.

Also I listened to the audio book on this one, and the narrator-John McDonough-was fantastic.

The Great Duvet Debate - Am I Too Old For My Current Decor Style? (+ A Target Giveaway)

I don't know what it is lately, maybe I'm nesting, but I've been obsessed with buying things for my apartment.  Maybe I'm stretching to try and make it feel more new?  I have been getting the itch to move a lot lately, but I'm not quite sure I'm ready to buy and I wont be able to find anything to rent that is as good a deal as what I'm paying currently.  Maybe that's it?  Maybe it's that I'm finally getting over Josh moving out and trying to make the place feel more my own?  Not sure.  But I've been obsessed.

For Christmas my grandmother gave me a faux down blanket that is much like a duvet.  I hadn't made it up to my grandmother's last holiday season so she'd give it to my mom and when I went down last weekend it finally made it's way into my custody.  In the spirit of all my redecorating I quickly became obsessed with finding the perfect duvet cover for it-it's time to stretch a little and change up my bedding.  I fell immediately in love with this beauty from Anthropologie:

Tradewinds Duvet by Anthropologie

I mean isn't it beautiful?  BUT... It's like $228 for just the cover... And none of those pretty pillows are included with it.  I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money, even it if is a work of art you sleep with.  I just don't have the kind of funds to treat myself to that expensive of a piece of fabric...  This makes me die a little inside, because I'm completely smitten, but how?  I just can't...

I spent the next few days completely obsessing over duvet covers.  There are so many out there, but I just didn't love any of them as much as I love that one?  It's too perfect.  Even when I'd find something I kind of liked that was around $150 I'd think "You know... Just another $70 or so..." but no, I couldn't do it.

This sparked a new debate in my head.  Am I too old for my current decor style?

Photos: 2015 Oregon Trip Part 3

Sunday morning we got up and had breakfast, but we were feeling tired so we scrapped our plans to drive up to Florence and opted to stay a little closer to home so it would be less travel and less work.  Instead we grabbed a sandwich for lunch and decided to head over to Eel Lake.  We went to Eel Lake last time and had a great time, but it's always great to go again.  On the way we stopped off first at Bastendorf Beach for a bit.

And here's this patient soul again.  He's so great about these photos.

After that we made our way towards Eel Lake, but we had to make a quick stop so I could take a picture of this creepy cop car.  They've placed it there to slow people down on the 101 but man theirs a super creepy dead-looking dummy in it.

The weekends of my trips to Oregon are the best.  Mr. Bingo has Saturday and Sunday off so we get to go out on adventures.  We got up and had pancakes, and then we hit the road in my little rental car and headed south.  The first place we stopped was Port Orford where we headed right out to the dock and took some photos of my one true love-the Pacific Ocean.

Photos: 2015 Oregon Trip Part 1

For the long President's day weekend I was lucky enough to hit up my favorite relaxation destination-the coast of Oregon.  I mean I really should be a Pacific Northwesterner-I NEED the green, the coast, the cool weather, the moisture-and if I go to long with out it I get a crazy itch and have to book a trip. I'm lucky to have friends I can stay with so it makes it a better possibility.

Florence, OR

Well it had been about a year since I'd been so I was definitely feeling the itch-and this time I rented a car to have a little more freedom and not make Mr. Bingo drive the two and a half hours each way to pick me up both times.  This also allowed me to stop off in Florence and have dinner with my old neighbors Seneca and Navi-who moved there a while back.  They took me to a little restaurant called Homegrown where we had some wonderful food and my new favorite cider which is an apricot cider they make in Bend, OR.  I really wish I could find it here.

Seneca and Navi in Florence Oregon

After dinner I headed down the coast to Coos Bay where Mr. Bingo lives.  I was really grooving on the independence of having my own car and even though I'd forgotten to write down his address I thought for sure I could find his house on my own.  I'd been a few times, though I'd never driven and by this point it was dark, so I did get a little lost on the way.  However, I did make it before too late and it was nice to show up with my suitcase in hand and have done it on my own.

There's just something magic about driving down the 101 at twilight with that sea-soaked air and your music blaring that speaks to my heart.  I have so much love for it.  Psst-Beth-look what I was driving.  It was a great little car!

Chevy Spark Rental Car

It was pretty late at that point so Mr. Bingo and I hung out for the evening.  The next day he had to work so I worked on a few things and then I went out and took some photos in the yard.  Before we decided to head out for lunch at a local Chinese place he wanted to try (good food but weird atmosphere) we looked out the window and saw this little guy stopping by to say hello.

Deer in Coos Bay

I couldn't get quite the shot I wanted through the windows so I wondered if I could sneak out the front door without him noticing.  With very careful and quiet sneaking (it took a while) I was finally out on the porch in my stocking feet and face to face with my little friend.  He stood their staring at me for a few minutes until he decided he'd had enough of the paparazzi and ran off into the bushes.

So then we went to lunch at the little Chinese place, which had tasty food but there was no music or ambiance so we just sat there wondering if the cook was killing people in the back or something.  Then we took our fortune cookie numbers and headed to the gas station to play them in the lottery.  We didn't win.  Sadly.  When we got back to the house Mr. Bingo had some working to do so I went out to take photos in the yard. I was working on playing with lighting since I've recently learned how to work the aperture and Fstops and ISO and all that fun business.  So here are a few of my favorite photos I took in the yard.

The Weekly Round-Up: My Favorite January Love Yourself Posts

Well, yes... I'm a little lot behind on getting everything done for January-but we had a great turn out for our January Love Yourself Challenge.  Thanks to everyone who joined us and worked on loving themselves more.  This was supposed to go up last week but that failed-oops!  So I have it for you today.

As we stated in our first post, each month we'll be featuring one blogger who linked up with us-our favorite post from the month.  Kenzie shared three posts  she chose (and they were good ones) and so I wanted to share a couple different posts.  I decided to link this up with my Weekly Round-Up post this week too-so here you go-five posts I loved just from the Love Yourself challenge.

♥ Love and Lighthouses shared a great list of the things she loves about herself-it's so great to hear it and I hope it was great for her to write it too.  It's always great to even stop and remind yourself how great you are-we forget too often!

♥ Anchor in the Stratosphere wrote about loving all of her broken pieces-which is a great place to be in.  Instead of letting those pieces continue to haunt you for the rest of your life, reacting with kindness and embracing them really helps you get past it!

♥ The Katherine Wheel chose the word "Present" for her 2015 word of the year, and I couldn't agree or love it more!  It's a perfect word and I think we all need to take the time to remind ourselves to be more present.

♥ Kimi Who wrote a fantastic letter to her teenage self, and I really thought it was brave!

The Weekly Round-Up

How this works:
  1. Follow your hosts Miss Angie at My So-Called Chaos and Aubrey at High-Heeled Love.
  2. Write up a blog post sharing some of your favorite posts this week from other bloggers.
  3. Add the Weekly Round-Up Button (code above) and/or a link back to your blog post.
  4. Link-up with our weekly linky party on Sundays.
  5. Visit other party-people to see what posts they liked this week!

Book Review: The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

Book Review: The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

Synopsis According to Goodreads

Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master, the husband who commissioned her, dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York in 1899.

Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop. Though he is no longer imprisoned, Ahmad is not entirely free – an unbreakable band of iron binds him to the physical world.

The Golem and the Jinni is their magical, unforgettable story; unlikely friends whose tenuous attachment challenges their opposing natures – until the night a terrifying incident drives them back into their separate worlds. But a powerful threat will soon bring Chava and Ahmad together again, challenging their existence and forcing them to make a fateful choice.

What I Thought of the Book

I really liked this book.  Not only is the story so fascinating that you really don't want the book to end, but each character is so richly created with their own fascinating back story that you never get tired of them.  This writer really does her job well and helps you get hooked, and the characters are believable for their time period, and the lore and history is deeply saturated and fascinating as it interchanges and intertwines between the different cultures and religions in the early 1900s.

I listened to the audio book, which was narrated by George Guidal who did a fabulous job with the accents and the pronunciation.  I felt like this book may have even been one that was better as an audio book due to his skill and way of making each character come even more alive.  He also did a wonderful job of letting you know simply by accent and inflection which character it was focusing on, as it changes throughout the book and you hear different points of view.

Book Review: Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer

Book Review: Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer

Synopsis According to Goodreads

With only a yellowing photograph in hand, a young man - also named Jonathan Safran Foer - sets out to find the woman who may or may not have saved his grandfather from the Nazis. Accompanied by an old man haunted by memories of the war; an amorous dog named Sammy Davis, Junior, Junior; and the unforgettable Alex, a young Ukrainian translator who speaks in a sublimely butchered English, Jonathan is led on a quixotic journey over a devastated landscape and into an unexpected past.

What I Thought of the Book

This book walks a very strange line in it's storytelling. I listened to the audio book and one moment found myself weeping in the car as a character recounts how the Nazi's marched into her village and dragged all of the Jews out into the town square, and how horrifying it was to watch her whole family murdered... Then the next moment I'm yanked from my sadness by a very bizarre (and adult) tale about how the author's grandfather used his dead and limp arm with the ladies... You can go from totally sad and horrified to being totally confused and mortified in an entirely different matter-in seconds!

Still, it was a very colorful and interesting tale, and I especially enjoyed the parts (in butchered English) told by Alex, the young Ukrainian translator. He was my favorite character, and it was hilarious to hear how he explained things differently than the main character.

New Blogger Series: Sizing & Positioning Photos

New Blogger Series: Sizing & Positionning Photos

There's something about a blog that has their photos figured out-something wonderful.  When I visit a blog the first thing that draws me in are their photos.  If they have large clear photos lined up beautifully in the post I'm much more likely to click their little follow/subscribe button.  Even before I read through a lot of posts-it's just a fact that we live in a very visual society, and I am a visual person.

I'm not saying I wont read a blog that doesn't have good photos, there are plenty that I follow, I'm just less likely to check in as often, and I'm less likely to follow new blogs that have bad photos or poorly composed posts.

Sizing & Positioning Photos: Understanding Your Post Space

First thing is first, you must understand the space you're working with.  It's kind of like how you can't really buy blinds for your window without first knowing how big your window is-what if your blinds are too small or too big?  Man that would look funny.

Most blog editors are going to allow you to customize the size of your posts a little by altering the width in your template design.  With blogger (unless you've purchased your template somewhere else and it's preconfigured) you can easily alter it by going to Settings > Template > Customize.  Once you're in the Blogger Template Designer you can click on Adjust widths from the left hand menu and adjust your sliders there.  The post size is going to be a combination of how large you set the Entire Blog vs. how large you set the sidebar sliders.

How to change your blog widths in Blogger.

If you feel comfortable enough, this can also be adjusted in the actual HTML-which may be the only way if you're using a pre-configured template.  For help doing so, I recommend checking out this postWarning: Not all templates will be the same-it may be best not to alter this if you aren't 100% sure what you are doing-and ALWAYS back up your template before altering the HTML.  I have a tutorial for that HERE.

If you're happy with your blog widths, you can play with the size of your photos in your blog posts to see about what sizes happen to work for you, it will probably differ for other people, but the best tip I have for you is fill the space width-wise as best as you can.  For example, I currently use a 750px width as my widest photo in order to best utilize the space in my blog posts.  I try to make all photos total up to that size so they line up nicely.  I'll show you how to change that in a moment.

Sizing & Positionning Photos: Choosing Photos For Your Post

Once you're aware of what space you're working with, you'll want to choose which photos you want to use in your post.  Whether they're photos from your Instagram, higher quality photos you took with a nice camera, something you created, or stock photos; you'll want to make sure they have the capability to fill the space you're working with.  Most high-quality photos can easily be made to fit any space-but if a photo is too small you may want to consider using something different.

Sizing & Positioning Photos: Uploading Your Photos

Uploading the photo can easily be done directly through most photo editors by clicking on the photo icon and choosing a method to upload.  Once in there you can upload from your from your computer, drag and drop, choose something that was uploaded previously, enter the URL for the photo, etc.

For blogger simply click on the little picture icon in the editor bar along the top of your post:

Where to upload photos in Blogger.
How to upload photos in blogger.

For Wordpress, click on the Add Media button that typically shows between your title and post:

Where to upload photos in Wordpress.
How to upload photos in Wordpress.

You can also use your HTML to add the photos.  Instead of using the tool that is given to you in your editor, you can use some very simple HTML codes.  The first thing you'll want to do is go into your HTML section (instead of the Compose section) and in the spot you want to put your photos in you can use some of these very basic codes:

If you want to insert an image that is not clickable, either to go anywhere or to show larger, use this code:

If you want to insert an image that does not link anywhere, but that opens up full size when someone clicks on it, use the following code. (This basically links the photo to itself.) If you want to link the photo to another page, use the same code but for the first url, put the web address of where you are linking the photo to.

Sizing & Positionning Photos: Changing the Size of Your Photos

Some blogging editors have a default sizes in pixels for width on horizontal photos or the height on vertical photos, for example the default sizes for Blogger are as follows:
  • Extra Large: 640px
  • Large: 400px
  • Medium: 320px
  • Small: 200px
That would mean for horizontal photos setting it to extra large means it would be 640px wide, but a vertical photo would be 640px tall.  Same for Large, horizontal would be 400px wide, but vertical would be 400px tall, etc.

To change the photo size, simply click on the photo and from the pop up below it will give you the options to choose from.

Here's an example of what it looks like.  I've uploaded this horizontal photo four times.  The actual photo is the same size all four times (I made these non-clickable), but using the selection method above I've changed it to each different size:

New Blogger Series: Sizing & Positioning Photos
New Blogger Series: Sizing & Positioning Photos
New Blogger Series: Sizing & Positioning Photos
New Blogger Series: Sizing & Positioning Photos

Most of the time the blogger defaults are going to work great for you, and typically the extra large size is going to work great for filling your space.  However if your posts are slightly smaller, or slightly larger than the defaults you may need to manually edit the coding.  Personally, I upload the photo first, select extra large, then I go in and alter the coding in the HTML section.

Here's the code as it shows normally for my first photo selected at Extra Large:

Since my optimal sizing is 750px wide, I go in and change the width to "750" and adjust the height accordingly.  Make sure you change the height too or the photo may look weird and stretched out.  I can eyeball it, but sometimes putting it into a photo editor and re-sizing the width there will show you what the height should be, and then you can input the most accurate number.  Here's what my code and photo look like now:

New Blogger Series: Sizing & Positioning Photos

Another great trick, and often a better one if you are concerned with storage space on your photo hosting service is to simply set the photo to the correct size you need before uploading, then tell blogger to just show it at it's Original Size when selecting the sizing.  The only downfall to this is that it wont be able to be seen larger if it's clicked on.

Positioning Photos

Now you've got the sizing down, it's time to look into positioning photos.  The first thing is your alignment.  Clicking on the photo (see the example above in changing the size) will also give you the alignment options such as LeftCenter, and Right.  I typically think that left-aligned text with centered photos look best, but that's just my personal opinion.

You can also set the alignment with HTML too by using simple Center tags like this:

Or a more complex tag like this:

There are so many ways to position your photos, and it's super easy to do with wide photos when you just want them to fill the space, but then when it comes to vertical/square photos and putting them next to each other, it can get a bit tricky as you try to keep the widths lined up properly.

For example, when it comes to vertical photos do you want the width to fill like the wide ones do?  Or do you want two vertical photos to show side by side?  If you want it to fill, both the simple upload method and the HTML upload method work great-all you have to do is go in and alter the width of the vertical photo to match in the coding.

For example, if you simply upload it and set it to extra large it's not going to fill properly and may look kind of weird like this:

Here's how it looks when I take an extra couple of minutes to go in and adjust my sizing and alignment:

Here's what that code looks like:

If you want to put two photos side by side then typically the simple uploader is not going to allow them to sit right next to each other.  But you can use that uploader and then grab the code from what it uploads to put into your own code, or host the photos somewhere else and just use the code.  In this case, you'll want to break it down by sizing and whether your photos have spaces or not.

For this blog I don't have any spaces in between photos (my template doesn't even allow it) so I can simply take my 750px and divide to see how wide my photos need to be.  For example, I know two photos next to each other have to be 375px wide each, or three next to each other have to be roughly 250px each to fit right.  If you have spacing you'll want to accommodate your sizing to include those spaces.  You can play with widths too-maybe one photo needs to be 370px and the next 380px just on how it fits, as long as they total up to match it's great!

Here's an example of what mine looks like with two next to each other:

Here's the code for that:
