August 12x30 Challenge: Photo a Day

Sooooo honestly, I didn't realize it was August already.  No joke, I've been so swamped with things like my house that I haven't at all had a chance to even think about what's coming up.  Well, August 1st snuck up on me, and here we are-time to announce August's 12x30 Challenge!

Ways to participate this month:

This month's challenge is all about the pictures, so it's really simple to participate-just take a photo a day.  No joke.  You can either share each photo daily on your blog or write a round-up with all of them-it's totally up to you!  You can choose whether you're going to share them on Instagram each day, or just take them with your nice camera and post them later, or both!

Need inspiration?  Well Alanna of @AlannaandCo is hosting an August Instagram Challenge called #EverythingAugust that you could totally join in with as well.

July 12x30 Challenge: Be Present

July 12x30 Challenge: Be Present

Whoa, this year is flying by!  It's more than half way over now, can you believe it?  Sheesh... Let's enjoy Summer while we can, shall we?  It's hot hot hot here, but still beautiful.

Ways to participate this month:

  • Take a day off from your phone/computer.  No internet, no Facebook, no texting, nothing.  Just go outside and enjoy time with the people you care about.
  • Make a conscious effort to leave your phone at home or in the car when you're going out with people.
  • Make a "phone basket" for your table.  Everyone puts their phones in the baskets during dinner and they're not allowed to touch them until everyone is done.  Bonus, if you go out to eat, the first person to touch their phone pays for everyone!
  • Make an effort to not look at your computer/phone at least an hour prior to bedtime.  This will help you sleep better.
  • Have a "No TV Week" where the TV stays off all week.  Instead read, play board games, talk to people, etc.
  • Take up meditation.
  • Start a gratitude journal and write each day one thing that you were grateful for that day.
  • Start journaling of any kind, and make sure to do it each night before bed so you are fully present for that day.
  • Pay attention to the small things and the environment around you. Be thankful for the little things and living for the moment -- it will enable you to cultivate more positive experiences.

Basically just take the time to actively be present in your life, and then write about it on your blog and join us!

Blogging Prompts This Month
  • Write a list of ideas for "being present" in your life.
  • Write about an experience you had this month (or ever) where you were fully present.
  • Write about all of the things you can (or did) do when you weren't worried about your computer, phone, TV, etc.
  • Share some of your journal entries.

May 12x30 Challenge: Random Acts of Kindness

May 12x30 Challenge: Random Acts of Kindness

Hey, hey, hey-it's May!  April sure flew by didn't it?  Wowza.  Well, I'm excited for the May 12x30 Challenge because it's all about doing for others-it's time for the Random Acts of Kindness challenge?  Are you on board?  You really should be!

This challenge is a year-long challenge with a new theme each month hosted by myself and Chasing My Extraordinary.  Read about the entire challenge HERE.

Ways to participate this month:

There are so many ways you can do random acts of kindness, you can spend a lot, or spend a little, or spend nothing.  Here are some ideas for you:

These random acts of kindness wont cost you anything:
  • Leave someone you love a little happy note.
  • Leave a random stranger a little happy note-somewhere like in a book at the library, taped under a table at a restaurant, etc.
  • Feature another blogger or shop on your blog for free-just to help spread the word.
  • Donate unwanted toys/clothes/books/blankets, etc. to local shelters.
  • Organize a charity event with your friends or group. You could do a food/clothing drive, schedule a day to go volunteer, anything!
  • Make an effort to smile and/or compliment people you see daily.
  • Donate blood/plasma.
  • Start recycling.
  • Help a stranger return their cart-this is especially awesome for the elderly or moms.
  • Leave happy notes on bathroom mirrors-like these.
  • Print out a free compliments sheet so people can take what they need.
  • Clean a friend or family member's house when they're not expecting it.
These random acts of kindness will only cost you a little:
  • Leave change/a dollar in an envelope on a vending machine for a random stranger.
  • Buy a coffee for the person behind you in line at the coffee shop.
  • Donate food to the local food bank-they actually struggle most in the Summer!
  • Hide a dollar in the dollar store or dollar section.
  • Make a home-cooked meal for a sick or stressed neighbor/friend.
  • Buy a meal for a homeless person.
  • Bake a treat and drop it off to someone out of the blue.
  • Leave laundry detergent & some quarters at the laundry mat.
  • "Ding Dong" ditch your neighbors.
  • Drop a few coins in parking meters that are low.
  • Leave your mail carrier a small note/treat thanking them.
  • Slip a few dollars into the case with a Netflix return and a note saying snacks are on you!
These random acts of kindness go the extra mile and may cost a little more:
  • Pay for a stranger's meal at a restaurant.
  • Leave a gift card or cash in a book at a bookstore to cover the cost of the book for the person who buys it.
  • Make a bunch of "Blessings Bags" for the homeless and keep them in your car.
  • Bring flowers to the elderly at a local nursing home.
  • Donate pre-paid phone cards to the local women's shelter.
  • Donate new or handmade blankets to the children's ward of the local hospital.
  • Send someone something off of their wishlist in total secrecy.
  • Put together a "Dinner's On Us" basket for a needy family you know.
  • Leave your server or pizza guy an extra big tip.
Or you could go all out and do one/all of the following:
  • Have a RAOK date night (even if it's just with a friend). Great ideas HERE.
  • Take your kids on an RAOK adventure all over the city. Great ideas HERE.
  • Do random acts of kindness in the memory of people to spread awareness-like THESE.
  • Make RAOK art and leave it for people asking them to Pay it Forward.
  • Encourage others to continue the RAOK cycle with these adorable punch cards.
Blogging Prompts This Month
  • Share a list of your favorite RAOK ideas.
  • Go on a RAOK adventure (like the date night or kids day listed above) and document it.
  • Take photos of the RAOKs you do through the month and share them.
  • Write about a time when someone did an RAOK for you and what it meant to you.
  • Write about how doing RAOKs for people makes you feel.

Semi-Charmed 2015 Summer Book Challenge

Semi-Charmed 2015 Summer Book Challenge

So the amazing book blogger Megan from Semi-Charmed Life, who was the winner of The Bookish Babe award in my 2015 Best of Blog Awards, is hosting a summer reading challenge!  I figure since I'm taking time off from school I should totally jump in on this and try to get some good reading done.  I have so many books to finish!

General Rules:
  • The challenge will run from May 1st, 2015 to August 31st, 2015.  No books that are started before 12AM on May 1st or after finished August 31st will be counted.
  • Each book must be at least 200 pages long.  Audiobooks and large print books are fine, as long as the regular print version meets the page requirement.
  • A book can only be used for one category, and each category can only be completed once.  If you want to switch a category for a book later on, that is fine, just make sure to account for it in your points.
  • Rereads can be used for a maximum of 3 books in the challenge.  This rule is meant to encourage you to try new books while still allowing you to revisit books from your childhood or young adulthood that you might get more out of now.  Please reread the entire book within the time frame of the challenge in order to count it; no simply finishing old books or partial rereads.
  • The highest possible total for the challenge is 200 points, and the first five people to finish the challenge will be invited to contribute a category for the next challenge.
Challenge Categories:
  • 5 points: Freebie! Read any book that fits the general rules.
  • 10 points: Read a book you have never heard of before. (Just go to a shelf and pick a book based on the cover, the title, whatever you want!)
  • 10 points: Read a book that has been on your TBR list for at least two years. (If you've had a Goodreads account for 2+ years, this will be easy to figure out. If you don’t, do your best to pick a book you’re pretty sure you’ve been wanting to read for years.)
  • 10 points: Read a book that won a Goodreads "Best Book" Award in 2014.
  • 15 points: Read a book by an author who is completely new to you.
  • 15 points: Read a book by an author you have read before. (No re-reads for this one.)
  • 15 points: Read a book with "light" or "dark" in the title. (Or "lightness" or "darkness.")
  • 20 points: Read a book with the name of a city, state or country in the title.
  • 20 points: Read a book with an animal on the cover.
  • 25 points: Read a book that is part of a series with at least four books.
  • 25 points: Read a book that is longer than 500 pages long. — Submitted by winter finisher Kristen from See You in a Porridge.
  • 30 points: Read a book with an alliterative title. (All words in the title must begin with the same letter; no exceptions for articles or prepositions. Examples: Gone Girl or Nicholas Nickleby. Yes, this is tough, which is why it's worth the most points!)
What I Plan on Reading:
How to check in:
Megan will post a check in post on the first day of each month, starting with June 1st, on which you can comment with your current pitons/reading.  She will also keep a scoreboard of the previous months points on the posts.

How to join:
Create a preliminary post (like this one) and post it on your blog, then head on over and link it up with Megan's original post to sign up.  The preliminary post is mandatory.  You can always change your list of things you plan to read, but it's fun to see what people are thinking for the categories.   See the rest of the rules over in the original post.

What are you going to read?
Don't forget to link up any April reading/book posts with our April Reading Challenge!

How to Curb Your Spending & Start A Budget Right From Your Bank Account

Remember how I said I wasn't going to participate in the No Spending 12x30 monthly challenge for this month?  Well at first I wasn't... I spent a ton of money at the first of the month-I bought things for my apartment, I bought supplies to open my new shop, and I fully admitted I wasn't going to be stopping my spending.  But then I was surprisingly thrust into a new budget.

I'm going to buy a house.  I mean, I just decided I was ready to move and if I was going to be spending so much I might as well buy something.  So I applied for a mortgage, I was approved, and I'm already house hunting.  It all happened in a matter of hours, and the one thing that has been stressed above all is "save save save!"  So now?  Now I'm on a no-spend budget.

How to Curb Your Spending & Start A Budget Right From Your Bank Account

So in the spirit of budgeting, the first thing I needed to do was get an idea of where all my money goes.  I mean I make pretty good money, it's not a ton, but it's a lot more than I did years ago. So why do I still mostly live paycheck to paycheck?  Well, because I don't budget.  I don't pay any attention to where it's all going-and that's a problem.

Most banks allow you to go in and categorize your spending, so that's what we're going to talk about today.  My online account allows you to simply click on a transaction and put it in a group and even add notes about it so you don't forget what it was for.  That's where we start, and you should go ahead and log into your bank account and start categorizing.

How to Curb Your Spending & Start A Budget Right From Your Bank Account

I did a test period of 45 days-from February 1st to March 17th, and now this period included my tax return so I've removed the amount of the return and the (rough) amount of it from both my payouts (I paid off a bunch off all of my credit cards and a few other things with it) and my income to make this more like a normal amount of time.  I even went through my credit cards to see how much I am charging.

For this period, I spent/paid out roughly $4,108.45.
For this period, I charged/went in debt roughly $1,649.52.
For this period, my income was roughly $3,526.21 (not including income from blogging.)

See the problem?  Why on earth am I spending so much MORE (roughly $2,231.76 more) than what I'm earning?  This is how we end up with credit card debt-and yes I paid it all off and already have a good chunk of it again.  This is not okay.  This is where I realize that something needs to change.  But what?

Here's the part where you now get to sort your bank account history by individual sections so you can see how much you spent in each of the categories you outlined previously.  This will help you see where your spending has gone to.  Here's a break down of my expenditures:

Utilities: $1,659.98
Rent: $1,402.7
Electricity: $45.27
Internet: $78.95
Television: $33.06
Phone: $100
Auto & Transport: $457.25
Car payment: $219
Car insurance: $111.55
Gas: $120.86
New tail light: $5.84
Food & Dining: $1,158.78
Groceries: $650.35
Restaurants: $77.18
Fast Food: $241.68
Coffee Shops: $128.37
Alcohol & Bars: $60.89
Business/Blog Services: $294.28
Shop Supplies: $209.15
Blog Upkeep: $85.13

Educational Expenses: $9.72
Entertainment Purchases: $202.85
Music: $54.18
Movies: $25.00
Books: $88.67
Games: $35.00
Personal Care: $115.97
Hair & Beauty: $58.29
Gym: $57.68

Travel: $122.63
Rental Car: $107.70
Other: $14.93
Shopping: $1,374.72
Home Furnishings: $655.37
Clothing: $211.75
Online/Subscriptions: $128.60
Pet Food & Supplies: $174.25
Other/Hobbies: $146.15
Blog Swaps: $58.60

Yikes.  I mean really yikes.  When you break it down like that it's pretty easy to see where I'm going wrong.  I'm sure if you've broken yours down you're looking at it in the same kind of horror that I am.  Well, maybe you're not, but I certainly hope I'm not the only one who lets my spending get out of control.  Not that I would wish that on anyone, but man it's nice to not think you're alone in your bad choices.

So what can I do about this?  Well I can't really get any of the money I spent back, but I can take a look at my bad financial choices and learn from them going forward.  A penny saved is a penny earned right?  I'd rather funnel some of those wasted dollars into my savings account-which I need to be doing if I'm buying a house.

So let's look at where my biggest offenses are.  I mean I can't get around paying rent obviously, nor can I get around any of the auto expenses since I have to drive myself to work.  Honestly, my mistakes are in laziness and trying to shop my feelings away.  My food budget, specifically the hundreds of dollars I spend on fast food, is WAY too high.  I mean I know that the groceries bill isn't entirely groceries either, it's lazy shopping.  I'm also spending way too much in shopping, entertainment, and other categories...

Here's the part where you look at your break down of charges and decide where your trouble spots are.  Once you've identified those parts of your life that are costing you too much money you can make a plan going forward for how to fix it.  Pick out the things you are willing to give up or do more frugally, and make some goals going forward.

So what am I going to do about it?  Well here are my new financial goals:
  • No more fast food. Instead there will be meal planning, shopping lists, and preparing ahead.
  • Coffee shops = no.  I need to make coffee at home, it's just lazy lack of planning on my part.
  • Shopping = no.  No more frivolous spending. No more retail therapy, just real therapy.
  • Entertainment budget-No more buying books (except for swaps) until I've read 80% of what I have already.
  • Funnel all the extra funds into my savings account.
  • Try and sell the products in my shop.
How do your finances look?  What are you doing about it?
