Semi-Charmed 2015 Summer Book Challenge

Semi-Charmed 2015 Summer Book Challenge

So the amazing book blogger Megan from Semi-Charmed Life, who was the winner of The Bookish Babe award in my 2015 Best of Blog Awards, is hosting a summer reading challenge!  I figure since I'm taking time off from school I should totally jump in on this and try to get some good reading done.  I have so many books to finish!

General Rules:
  • The challenge will run from May 1st, 2015 to August 31st, 2015.  No books that are started before 12AM on May 1st or after finished August 31st will be counted.
  • Each book must be at least 200 pages long.  Audiobooks and large print books are fine, as long as the regular print version meets the page requirement.
  • A book can only be used for one category, and each category can only be completed once.  If you want to switch a category for a book later on, that is fine, just make sure to account for it in your points.
  • Rereads can be used for a maximum of 3 books in the challenge.  This rule is meant to encourage you to try new books while still allowing you to revisit books from your childhood or young adulthood that you might get more out of now.  Please reread the entire book within the time frame of the challenge in order to count it; no simply finishing old books or partial rereads.
  • The highest possible total for the challenge is 200 points, and the first five people to finish the challenge will be invited to contribute a category for the next challenge.
Challenge Categories:
  • 5 points: Freebie! Read any book that fits the general rules.
  • 10 points: Read a book you have never heard of before. (Just go to a shelf and pick a book based on the cover, the title, whatever you want!)
  • 10 points: Read a book that has been on your TBR list for at least two years. (If you've had a Goodreads account for 2+ years, this will be easy to figure out. If you don’t, do your best to pick a book you’re pretty sure you’ve been wanting to read for years.)
  • 10 points: Read a book that won a Goodreads "Best Book" Award in 2014.
  • 15 points: Read a book by an author who is completely new to you.
  • 15 points: Read a book by an author you have read before. (No re-reads for this one.)
  • 15 points: Read a book with "light" or "dark" in the title. (Or "lightness" or "darkness.")
  • 20 points: Read a book with the name of a city, state or country in the title.
  • 20 points: Read a book with an animal on the cover.
  • 25 points: Read a book that is part of a series with at least four books.
  • 25 points: Read a book that is longer than 500 pages long. — Submitted by winter finisher Kristen from See You in a Porridge.
  • 30 points: Read a book with an alliterative title. (All words in the title must begin with the same letter; no exceptions for articles or prepositions. Examples: Gone Girl or Nicholas Nickleby. Yes, this is tough, which is why it's worth the most points!)
What I Plan on Reading:
How to check in:
Megan will post a check in post on the first day of each month, starting with June 1st, on which you can comment with your current pitons/reading.  She will also keep a scoreboard of the previous months points on the posts.

How to join:
Create a preliminary post (like this one) and post it on your blog, then head on over and link it up with Megan's original post to sign up.  The preliminary post is mandatory.  You can always change your list of things you plan to read, but it's fun to see what people are thinking for the categories.   See the rest of the rules over in the original post.

What are you going to read?

August Favorites Around the Blogosphere

I'm trying to make a much better effort to get back to reading all of these wonderful blogs I love, and leaving comments.  Sometimes it becomes difficult to keep up as you find new people to follow, and try to check in with all of your followers as well.  For a while there, I was so overwhelmed with following people, posting on my two blogs, volunteering, and working that I just kind of dropped off for a while...

Well I'm back to reading, and checking in with the people and blogs I love.  Also, thanks to passionfruit and looking for people to sponsor, I've even found some other fantastic blogs to follow and keep up with.  There really are some amazing people out there.

I wanted to share some love here, and share some of my favorite posts with you.  Lena from Mom2MemphisandRuby once included me in one of these, so I have to send her a BIG thank you for the idea.  I love that she shows the love, and I love showing love too!

Some new favorite blogs that I'm reading:

Recently I found Jes at The Militant Baker  due to the Womanifesto movement she started.  Then I got poking around and found out how awesome she really was.  She's a curvy girl who's proud of her size and wrote a great piece called Why I'm Fat that everyone should read. I could really learn a thing or two from her.  I need to learn to love myself despite my weight, and am going to keep up with her blog now.

I found Gypsy Moth Sol simply by following a chain of sponsor/ads on other blogs.  I immediately fell in love with her bohemian blog and emailed her to set up a swap of buttons.    She emailed me back to let me know that she was also a hula-hooper and that she though my blog was a fit for swapping.  She is so lovely!  She writes about things like charging stones & crystals and she's so positive and filled with love.  I love it.

I'm loving Kitty and Buck, and I even chose to sponsor them due to this fact.  She is adorable, and so so friendly.  She has awesome funky fashion sense, inspired me with her Womanifesto,  and she's a thrifting queen.  I love a good thrift find!

Lattes and Love

I've decided that I want Torie from Lattes & Love to be one of my new blogging buddies.  I sponsored her blog, and she has tweeted me often since, and she is fantasticly nerdy, sweet, and super friendly-everything I want in a bloggy bff.  She even helped me decide to get my Doctor Who goodies the other day.   She  even made some awesome comic book heels that I need to try making.  Just read her re-introduction and I dare you not to think she's fantastic!

Some favorite posts this month:

I already talked about the the Womanifesto from Kitty and Buck, and the Why I'm Fat post from The Militant Baker... So I'll move onto a few others I've loved reading this month.

Have to shout out to Beth at Living a Goddess life, she wrote a fantastic sponsor post all about me! It was so sweet-I'm so lucky to have her as a friend!

Kate Henley wrote about womanhood and how it's not exactly what we expected when we were younger in her post The Truth About Womanhood.  To be honest, she's another new blog I'm enjoying-she's very real.

Mom2MemphisandRuby wrote about Taking Back [her] Blog, which was something I have been thinking about for a while.  It was nice to know I'm not the only one.

Camille wrote a post called If You Really Knew Me, and I loved it.  I think she's awesome.

Then there was this great post from Don't Quote the Raven (that I found through this post on PF) about Blog Snobs. She has some very valid points-and hey-don't be a blog snob!

I was inspired by this post about fences by Gypsy Moth Sol.  She is so right when she says that we can really learn from children-as they have not yet built all of these emotional fences.

Torie with Lattes & Love wrote about not using yourself as a measuring stick.  You really can't compare yourself to other people, especially when it comes to body issues. It was a great reminder.

While you're there, don't forget to check out the sweet and totally flattering post she wrote all about me!

Did you find any great posts here?
How about anywhere else? Have a favorite this month? Let me know!
