It's my birthday today! To celebrate, I have the lovely Emilie from Emilie Lima Burke on the blog to give one lucky winner some Newport Skinny Tea, however before we get to the giveaway I'd like to introduce you to her and let you get to know her a bit. So, I interviewed her!
How did you get started blogging?
A couple of years ago I had a kind of big surgery and I blogged the entire experience anonymously. The blog is no password protected and you can’t find it online, but it was a place where I got to write about my transition and how I was dealing with everything that was going on.
About a year after that, a friend of mine moved half way around the world and started a blog. Eventually her posts got to be less and less frequent until they stopped. When I asked her why, she said she had finished adjusting and that this was her life now and she was okay with that.
So now, here I am, wrapping up senior year, visiting companies to figure out what I’ll be doing next, and transitioning in so many ways. I started blogging to share my transition and experience. Now, it’s evolved to a place where I also get to work with a number of other really inspiring bloggers. I’ve loved connecting to other women.
What is one thing you've learned since you started blogging?
I don’t think people realize how much work a blog is- not to say I don’t enjoy it because I do. I just don’t think people understand how much work it is to maintain all the codes that keep all those snazzy little buttons working the way they’re supposed to.
What is your favorite thing about blogging?
I’ve really loved the feedback. Hearing the support of strangers while I’m writing my senior thesis (so I can graduate!) has really helped keep me motivated. As you’re reading this, I’m proofreading the final pages of my thesis! I’m so excited to being able to dedicate more time to growing my blog, so I can reach more amazing readers, like you!
You go to Princeton (AMAZING!) do you love it?
Like every school, Princeton has its pros and cons. Most of the time, though, I do love it. This winter was harsh- like really harsh- but I’m so lucky to attend an institution with a very general financial aid policy and amazing academic opportunities. I’ve gotten to visit TWO continents because of Princeton support. I would do it all over again if I could.
What made you interested in American Politics?
I’ve been in love with politics for as long as I can remember! My dad has always been listening to political talk radio and I just picked it up somewhere along the way. He is, by the way, the best political sparring partner. I’m always surer about my beliefs and opinions after debating with him about them.
When you graduate, where are you hoping to take your career with this degree?
I’ve committed to a Venture for American two-year fellowship after graduation. I’ll be working with a VFA-partner start-up in a TBA city. Lots still up in the air, but I hope to know more by the end of May… hopefully.
I absolutely love my sisterhood. I am so proud to be an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Zeta Phi Chapter. Like other Princeton sororities, we don’t have a house, but we do have an amazing community of loving, supporting sisters who are always there for me.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
This is a question I’ve gotten a lot lately and, frankly, I’m not sure. I’m still in college. I don’t know where I’ll be in six months, so I can’t see past that to figure out where I’ll be in 5 years. Ask me again in six months and hopefully I’ll have a different answer for you.
If you could have one wish granted, what would it be?
I always feel like it’s unfair to ask for money or excess with a wish. I’ll earn that. I have health, education, and opportunity in front of me, so I don’t have a wish right now. I have lots of blessings to appreciate. I wish I appreciated them more.
