It's a Risk to Love

It's a Risk to Love

Dear Readers,

Today I want to take a break from regular blogging and encourage you all to go out and take a risk.

Go fall in love with someone or something.  A new friend.  The way the sky looks...

Anything.

Do something you've never done before.  Do something you've been afraid to do.  Tell someone you love them...

Be brave.

Make a plan.  Plan that trip you've been putting off.  Book that cruise.  Register for school.

Life is short and today is your day.

Today.

Who knows what will happen tomorrow?

You are all bold and beautiful and I am so lucky to know you.

With an incredibly full heart,
Miss Angie

Being a Girl is Ridiculous But... Speaking Your Truth Isn't

I confess... I'm starting to see myself in new ways that I never thought were truly possible.  Last night I stood in front of the mirror in my ugly old Eeyore PJ pants and a tank top-no shaper top to control my rolls, hair a mess, and just looked at myself in the mirror.  I liked what I saw.  I'm still working on getting in shape and improving this body of mine, but for once in my life I'm starting to truly love what I've got in the meantime.  There's something truly amazing about that.

Even a midst this week of hormones (ugh, I totally know what's coming next week when I get all weepy for no good reason-being a girl is ridiculous!) I could truly look at myself and think "Wow, I'm gorgeous." and even more shockingly I found myself thinking "I love this body of mine-even this big ass!" without feeling like they were empty words.  It was one of the best things I've felt in a long long time.

I confess... It's pretty much winter coat weather, and I don't mind one bit.  We had our first real snowfall on Sunday and I found myself staring out the window that night after everyone had gone to bed and contemplating the falling flakes.  I quickly threw on my sweater and boots and went out to stand in the middle of the yard, face up and staring at the sky, wishing for everything and nothing all at once.  I love that sweet stillness a quiet snowfall brings-it's perfect for contemplation.

I confess... It doesn't hurt that winter clothing is adorable too.  I'm loving wearing sweaters and my winter coat again-I even bought a pair of snow boots finally so I wont freeze trekking to my car this winter.

I confess... I ordered this adorable little Brad & Janet print from Pretty Clementine and I could not be happier with it.  Isn't it just fantastically sweet and geek-tastic all at once?  I'm going to frame it and put it up in the vanity area where I get ready for work each day.  So cute!  Doesn't hurt that it was only $5.

I confess... I've been thinking a lot about risk these days.  When I was younger I was never really afraid, at least not enough to let it persuade me not to do things.  I took chances, and I was happier for it.  Somewhere over the last few years I've developed this fear, or hesitancy rather, that has made me that kid at the top of the slide (as the quote indicates) and kept me from putting myself out there.  I'm done with it.  It makes life a lot less fun and it causes way more stress than it needs to, this letting fear control you.

There are lines in the song Love Me by Katy Perry that I mentioned on Monday that say "No more second guesses, No there's no more questing" and also "No concealing my feelings" that I've taken to heart.  I'm done being afraid to just go after the things I want or to speak my truth.  So this weekend I mustered up the courage (with the aid of a little too much liquid courage) to tell someone how I felt about them, and I have no regrets.  Who knows what will come of it?  I surely don't, but I feel better for having said it and am filled with hope and optimism-which is a nice feeling.

Lastly, I'm leaving you this lovely Friday with the above video.  It's about speaking your truth and coming out of your proverbial closet-whatever it may be.  (And no, we're not just talking about closets with rainbow colored walls, as she says.)

Happy Friday!

10 Practical Tips for Lowering Stress at Work

If you're human-things bug you.  If you're anything like me, nearly everything bugs you-sometimes even to the point of total overload.  That level of stress is not good for you, and it's certainly not good for your interactions with other people-specifically if those people are the ones who are bugging you.  I could try and be zen and tell you "just ignore it" or "water off a duck's back" but let's be real-how often does that really comfort you when you're trying not to snap?    So instead, I've come up with some practical tips to try and cut down on the stress in your life.

1. If you work in a place where you can, wear headphones at work.  This will cut down on the amount of sound annoyance you receive while working.  For example, you wont be distracted by those coworkers that never stop chatting, the guy on the other side of your cubicle who burps and farts all day, or those coworkers who just don't understand that you silence your cell phone in an office.

2. Stay out of the passing lane.  Nothing is more stressful than being in the passing/fast lane and some a-hole is going 5 miles under and holding up the line.  It's a fact that there are too many people out there that don't understand how the passing lane works-and it just causes stress for those of us that do.  But why do we always have to be in such a rush?  If we just kept to the right, went the speed limit, and put some music on we'd save ourselves a lot of trouble.  (Just ask my roommie, he gets 60+mpg staying at 60-65mph and doesn't have to stress about passing people.)

3. Leave your desk for breaks and lunch.  That's exactly what breaks and lunch are for-to get away from the stuff you do and stress over all day.  There are times I stay at my desk working on stuff over my lunch break and those are the days I go home feeling more beaten down than ever.  Give your brain a break and go talk to a coworker, take a walk, or at least get outside for some non-fluorescent lighting.

4. Don't skip lunch.  Skipping eating is not only not healthy for your body, but it also can cause stress binging later.  Avoid the overeating by eating regularly.

5.  Keep healthy snacks on hand, and a little bit of chocolate.  We all know what hangry (hungry+angry) is, and we've all seen the commercials saying "You're being a cow, have a Snicker's bar" (well, or something similar) so keep a little healthy snack on hand, something like nuts or fruit (protein without the sugar crash) will keep you happier longer and lower the stress levels.  Oh and having a little chocolate (dark chocolate is even good for you in small amounts) on hand for those mood-swing days is a lifesaver!

6. Drink lots of Water.  Dehydration stresses your body out, and if you're body is stressed-all of you is stressed.  It's hard to remember, but hydrate hydrate hydrate!

7. Kill 'em with kindness, a.k.a. be nice to people even if they aren't nice.  You'll feel better, I promise-if not for just being nice, for showing them up by being super sweet even if they were a raging beeyotch.

8. Log off of Facebook.  We all know that Facebook is a perpetual drama machine.  Even if you don't have friends stirring up trouble there's always a minefield of stress on Facebook-friends going and doing something without inviting you (hello, feeling left out is stressful), people posting political rants they haven't researched at all (I hate when something political happens, because I realize I hate like half of the people I'm friends with on Facebook), passive aggressive status attacks, inviting you to play Candy Crush eight-million-and-one times, etc.  I'm not saying forsake Facebook forever, just take a freaking break from it.

9. Unplug.  We're too attached to technology in general.  Turn off your phone and read a book or escape to the mountains where there is no cell phone coverage for a little while-even an hour helps (though I recommend an entire weekend for de-stressing).  Cellular devices are causing so much more stress now that we're all attached to them like a lifeline.

10. If all else fails, do something silly.  Stand up and dance like a fool at your desk or read Damn You AutoCorrect (I've banned myself from reading that at work because I absolutely can not control my laughter, it's ridiculous!).  A little laughter or some movement can really take the edge off.

What do you do to relieve stress throughout the day?

Let It Go; Let It Be; Let It In.

Dear Heart,
Dear Friend,
Dear Whoever Needs This,

Let it go. Those stories from your past follow you, they walk along behind you constantly whispering warnings in your listening ear.  Telling of lessons learned, and heartaches gained.  Be wary in listening.  Take it in, and let it go.  What has been, has been, and you cannot change it.  With that being the case, what is the point in regret?  Why let it ruin the beauty the future holds?

You're afraid, and you're shaking.  Can't quiet the voices in your head that tell you it might happen again... If you show your true self, will they turn in disgust and walk away?  Demons hiding deep within, if they're exposed will you lose the love you so long for?  You never know until you try, and if you don't, you will never have a chance at it.  Having it and losing it-well, that's better than never experiencing it at all, isn't it?  Even if you only have it for a little while, do you not want to taste it and savor it while it is there?  I promise you, you do.

Let go for the fear you carry, let go of the doubt, worry, and insecurity.  Just be.

Let it be.  Leave it lie there, don't poke it or scare it or try to force it to move.  You can't force things, you can't shape them into what they aren't supposed to be, and attempting to do so will only ruin their natural beauty.  If you take something with so much possibility and interfere, it may never reach full potential, and then what are you left with?  Let things be undefined and simplistic, which is how they are meant to be.  Don't complicate them with how you want them to be, and with your impatience.  Be patient.  Let it be what it is meant to be.

Let it in. Cease to block yourself off from the love those around you are offering. Open yourself up and absorb everything the world has to offer you.  It can be scary, yes, and opening yourself up to all of the good things also leaves you open and vulnerable to the negative things in life.  However, without the bad, how will you ever fully experience the good things life has to offer you?  If you never feel all the heartache and hurt, how do you know to enjoy the happiness when you have it?  How do you know not to take it for granted when life is wonderful?  It will all be worth it, every bit of bad will have been worth it when you find the happiness you've so been searching for.

You deserve to be happy, and you are the only one standing in the way of that.  Manifest your destiny, and be brave as you make your way through all of the obstacles that are between you and your objective.  These are so small compared to the greater gifts that await you at the end of your journey.  Wait for it, fight for it, and make it worth it.

Let it go; let it be, and let it in.

25 Reminders: Life is Beautiful

Did you know, that I have an amazing life? It may not always be easy, in fact at times it's rather difficult to refrain from laying down and giving up, but that doesn't mean it's terrible. Life is complicated; I have body image issues, financial difficulty, indecision, confusion, loneliness, fear, doubt, loss, heartache, and all of the other things that people experience. However, even through all of this, there are things that remind me that my life is worth living.

Here is a list of some things that remind me that life is beautiful.
  1. Amazing friends that are there whenever you need them.
  2. Tight hugs when the world seems upside down.
  3. Toddlers that say your name over and over again until you're annoyed and finally say "What?!?!?" just so they can respond with "I love you!"
  4. Cuddling on the couch, eating junk food and having a QAF marathon with your roomie.
  5. Sunday morning breakfast traditions, even when all but one person bails out, because that one person still matters more than they could possibly know.
  6. Saturday night game night, sitting around with good friends, joking and competing!
  7. French music that you can't understand, but is beautiful none-the-less!
  8. Watching a French film and being able to pick out the few words you know, because you're learning the language and get giddy that you can remember things!
  9. Old books, the way they smell and the way they look on your bookshelf.
  10. Curling up with an inspirational novel, something that lifts your soul, and brightens your day.
  11. Wandering through Target, just so you don't have to go home, and so you can spend a few extra minutes talking with a good friend. Whether it's looking for refrigerators or buying twenty dollars worth of jelly beans!
  12. Birthday lunches with grandmother's.
  13. Getting back to your roots for a day or two/Visiting your family.
  14. That feeling of accomplishment when the house is finally clean, or when you finish a huge project that you're proud of.
  15. Happiness is a new journal. A beautiful blank journal, just sitting there waiting for you to fill it with your hopes and dreams, lining the pages with memories...
  16. Comments on your blogs, photos, pages, anything... Friendly little reminders that people are actually there and paying attention.
  17. Songs with lyrics that cut you to the heart, relate to your life, or make you happy when you're feeling blue.
  18. Driving. Nothing but you and the open road, music blaring and no destination.
  19. Road trips. You and a few friends spending time in a car on vacation. Stopping for snacks, and singing along to musicals at the top of your lungs.
  20. Hearing a friend sound more confident when talking about something that used to hurt them more. Listening to their strength and watching with wonder as they grow to new heights and surprise themselves, even though you knew they could do it all along.
  21. Knowing that someone noticed little details like the smile in your eyes.
  22. Writing again for the first time in years, feeling the creativity flow through you.
  23. Walking barefoot through the dirt and grass, feeling the earth beneath your toes and feeling one with the Universe.
  24. The first warm sun of spring, bringing the world to life and warming you to the bone.
  25. Inside jokes, the kind that make you laugh out loud just because it pops into your head at a random moment.
I encourage anyone reading this to make a list of the top 25 things that remind you to love life... Just thinking about each of these brings a smile to my face, and will cheer me up on my darkest day.

Just re-reading these makes me remember just how much love I have in my heart for those in my life, and how much they truly help to make life worth living. I love you all!

The Mastery Of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz

I just finished reading this book, so I wanted to write a quick review here in my blog. This isn't the first time I've read it, as I did a few years back when I borrowed it from Melanie Grace, I think it was when we were living together. This book has a lot of good information in it, and while I think it's information that we all know deep down, sometimes you need someone to plainly say it (or write it) to remind you. At least that is how it was in my case.

When I read it the first time I remember loving it, it was brilliant and while I didn't feel like I agreed with everything in it, a lot of what was taught in it shaped some of my views on love. At the time, I hadn't had much experience in relationships, in fact I think it was pretty recent after the end of my very first relationship. However, a lot of what was in this book really stuck with me, so just before Yule this year I took the time to run to Barnes & Nobles and pick up two copies of it. One for [womanizer] (as a gift) and one for myself to read again. Really, I'm glad that I did.

Reading it this time, I feel like I agreed with a lot more of what he said, and that I soaked more of it in. It didn't do much to change how I feel about relationships or love, because they were pretty similar to begin with. It did reaffirm them for me though, and put into words a lot of how I felt. Enough that when I finished reading it I had the urge to pass it along, so that a certain friend of mine could take the time and read it, in hopes that it would reaffirm things for him. Especially the most important things that deal with self love, self destruction, the "Parasite" inside of us all, and how the way others act should not affect us and vice versa. It really opened my eyes, and I feel like sharing the knowledge I feel I've gained from it. I'll probably buy it again in a few months.

This book really speaks towards the way society can implant negative thoughts on us, and how we can be raised to believe them. We are all born innocent and full of love, and somewhere along the way we learn how to be distrustful, and how to be hurt, and to be hurtful in return. Our parents learned this while they grew, and they (along with the rest of society) then teach it to us as we grow up, and the cycle continues ever onward. Personally, I would hope that I have the strength to stop that cycle, and leave my children full of love and respect.

Another thing it tells us, is the story of "The Man Who Didn't Believe in Love", which is now one of my favorite legends. It tells of a man who went around giving lectures on the non-existence of love, because so many people use it to manipulate each other. He says "love is like a drug" because in each relationship you have the "dealer" of the "drug" and the person who is addicted and keeps coming back for more. The stronger partner deals out the love, and the weaker tries to soak up as much of it as they can, and they take any abuse the dealer gives out too, because they think they need it so badly and that they can't get it anywhere else. He vows that he does not believe in love, because he has had many such experiences and refuses to let anyone manipulate him with this false emotion.

So this man is walking through the park one day and he comes across a woman who is sitting in the grass crying. He stops to console her, and asks her why she is crying, and she replies "I am crying because love does not exist." The man is astounded, because he has finally found a woman who feels the same way he does. He talks to her, they develop a friendship, and soon they are spending all their time together. They never fight, and they never expect anything from each other, they have the perfect bond. One day when the man is away, he is contemplating his relationship with the woman. He realizes that what he feels for her must actually be love, and that he had been wrong all along. Love does exist, and it is much more pure and beautiful than anything he'd ever experienced. The man is so excited that he rushes home immediately to tell her how he feels about her. She, in turn, replies that she has felt this way for quite some time and has been afraid to tell him because of his disbelief in the emotion.

The legend then tells that the man is so happy, that he goes outside and sends his happiness into the universe. His happiness is so large that it pulls a star down into his hands and he hurries to give it to the woman. The happiness is so overwhelming, that for a moment the woman hesitates, and in that moment of doubt she drops it and it shatters. Now there is a man who is wandering the Universe, broken and lonely because he once again believes that love does not exist. There is also a woman who sits at home waiting for the man who once loved her, feeling remorse for that one moment of doubt that ruined their relationship.

So in asking yourself who was in the wrong, was it the woman who doubted for a moment? No, it was the man who decided to place his entire happiness in someones hands. If we place all of our happiness in the control of others, how can we ever expect to be happy? It is entirely up to us to be happy, and if we choose to be happy with someone else, we're all the better. We cannot rely on them to make us happy.

The book delves into quite a bit more information regarding loving yourself and being a whole person. It also emphasizes my previous belief that you have to be happy on your own, if you can ever be happy with anyone else. You have to love yourself to fully love another, and you have to be an equal part to a relationship, and not rely on them. It is the same with friends, family, and anyone you encounter.

In any case, I highly recommend this book to anyone, even if you read it simply to remind yourself of what you knew before. He has at least 3 other books that go along with it, and I plan on reading them as well.

Remember, God = Love and God is inside of you.

So YOU = LOVE.
