Chandelier: Why We Can't Cover Our Problems with Pills & Alcohol {Musical Mondays & Giveaway}

What is Musical Mondays?
Musical Mondays is a weekly linky party where we share a song we're into for the week, and talk about why we like it-or why it effects us.  Along with talking about music, I host a (usually) month-long music giveaway.

This week's song:
Chandelier
by Sia

+ cover by Sarah Bareilles

Party girls don't get hurt
Don't feel anythingm when will I learn?
I push it down, push it down...
I'm the one for a good time call
phones blowin' up ringin' my doorbell
I feel the love I feel the love

1 2 3, 1 2 3 drink, 1 2 3, 1 2 3 drink, 1 2 3, 1 2 3 drink
Throw 'em back until I lose count
I want to swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist, like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird in the sky, watch my tears as they dry
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier

I'm holding on for dear life, wont look down, wont open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, help me I'm holding on for dear life
I'm holding on for dear life, wont look down, wont open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, help me I'm holding on for dear life

Sun is up and I'm a mess
Gotta get up now, gotta run from this
Here comes the shade, here comes the shade

1 2 3, 1 2 3 drink, 1 2 3, 1 2 3 drink, 1 2 3, 1 2 3 drink
Throw 'em back until I lose count
I want to swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist, like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird in the sky, watch my tears as they dry
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier

I'm holding on for dear life
Wont look down, wont open my eyes
Help me I'm holding on for my life, wont look down wont open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, help me I'm holding on for dear life

I think this song is disturbingly beautiful.  I love Sia, but I love Sara Bareilles even more and getting a cover out of her was beautiful. Also, she's right about it being "pretty f*cking harsh." In my opinion sounds like it's all about a girl who's hiding from her problems by staying drunk.  She can't be hurt when she's drunk.  She pushes it down with another full glass of alcohol and when the sun comes up she starts drinking again to run from the mess of it all.  She sounds miserable, but she keeps running.  She closes her eyes and takes another drink.

I know alcoholics and drug addicts-and this is exactly what they do.  I'm not unsympathetic to how they feel.  I've felt so bad that the urge to drink it all away or find a Xanax that puts me out of my mind popped into my head-I understand how people get that way.  The problem is, when you just start ignoring the problems or covering up they just grow and it gets worse and worse.  They build up in side of you and eat at you slowly until it takes more and more of your vice to ignore them... Until it destroys your life entirely or kills you.

I've seen it destroy lives first hand.  I've seen people in and out of jail and rehab repeatedly and losing their families because they never learned how to get real help for their issues, and then they became chemically addicted to what they used to run from those issues... Creating more issues.  Creating more mess for everyone involved, and hurting themselves and those they love repeatedly.

Even for those of us who aren't addicted chemically to our vices-it's a daily battle.  If you suffer from depression or anxiety normally, or even if something just happens out of the blue that smashes your heart into a million pieces; the pain feels so incredibly intense that you have no idea how to get through it... It happens.  During those times I still think to myself that it's just easier to pour myself a glass and drown it out... But it's not.  The minute you sober up it's there staring you in the face.

You have to work through these things.  They don't go away unless you face them head on and deal with them.  Whether that means seeking professional help, asking a friend to hash it out with you, or meditation/writing it out-you have to face it.   Acknowledge what you're feeling and start working through it instead of pushing it down or hiding from it.  That's the only way to heal.
