Save Yourself - My First Tattoo

As most of you know, I spent last weekend in Seattle (more photos to come this week) with a few good friends in celebration of my honorary niece Courtney turning 18 and graduating.  On the drive up a briefly mentioned how fun it would be if we all got tattoos together, and Court latched onto that idea as something she desperately wanted to happen.  We did some calling and found an inexpensive place outside of the city and made the trip out to Diamond Tattoo in Renton.

I had a really hard time deciding what to get... I've been thinking about getting a tattoo for years and just can never decide what I want permanently placed on my body, or where.  I'd been thinking of getting a tattoo that said "Save Yourself" since I love the quote "Don't rely on a prince, save yourself" but I also wanted something to represent the ocean so I thought of a little wave doodle.  I sat down in the hotel room and doodled out a little drawing, took it to the tattoo artist and told him to spruce it up a bit, and he said "This is perfect-I'll just straighten your lines and add some shading."  This is what it came out with:

Save Yourself - My First Tattoo

That's my own little doodle and handwriting on my inner arm (just below the elbow) forever.  I am in love with it.

Courtney went first to get her very first tattoo.  Then I went to get my very first tattoo.  Then Kristina went, and it was for her second tattoo.  Courtney's didn't really hurt she said, mine hurt a bit (the inside of your arm is more sensitive than I expected), and Kristina said hers hurt a lot, whereas the one she has on her back didn't.

As you can see, Courtney and I both got quotes, and Kristina got her family's names in an infinity sign.  Also life is tough for a sweet little 16 year old who can't get a tattoo-but Aspen was such a champ waiting four hours with us!

So cute-and I'll always remember that I got this tattoo with these people I love!  I kind of want to go get a tattoo with all of the important people in my life now!

  2. I think a tattoo should absolutely be totally personal, and that yours is doodle in your own handwriting is amazeballs!

  4. I have two birds on my wrist as a memorial for my dad and brother who have passed. The birds come from a book by Alyson Noel.

  5. Love it! I've been working up the nerve to get a tattoo for almost 5 years now. Still no luck. I'm not afraid of the pain, but I know tattoos are forever so I want it to be truly meaningful.

I love that yours is so personalized. If I had any artistic ability whatsoever I would love to sketch my own, but my two year old daughter draws better than me, so probably not a great idea ;)

  6. Love it! I have a love/hate relationship with my tattoos. I loved them my entire 20s...but now that I'm in my 30s.... well, I still like them I just wish I would have kept them smaller...

I hope you enjoy yours for life!

  8. I am going to get one after the river trip we are taking for my 40th birthday, probably in September. I just have to figure out where to go. I'm getting my sons' zodiac symbols. Not exactly sure where yet.
    I really like yours!

  9. I like it.

I sometimes think I want a tattoo, but then I realize that there's nothing I am so attached to that I'd want to keep it forever.
