12x30 Challenge: Organization & Cleaning Calendar

For the February Organizational 12x30 Challenge I wanted to really work on getting organized this month-but I didn't want to totally overwhelm myself in the process.  Then the idea hit me-I needed an calendar with tasks split up day by day, and not only did I want to make one, but I wanted to share it with my friends in the bloggy world too.  So here it is-click on it to enlarge.  You can also save/print it.  Can you imagine how nice your place will look if you get through all of these?

Get organized this February with daily tasks!

For those of you that might prefer a checklist version of this calendar, never-fear for I have created one of those too!

Get organized this February with daily tasks!

As you can see, I've left some room on both of them for you to add things you need as well.  So feel free to personalize it a bit and make it what you will after you print it.   Here's a further explanation of what some of these mean:

February 12x30 Challenge: Get Organized

This month the 12×30 Challenge is all about organization. This could mean organizing your closet, your computer documents, your entire house, your priorities, or all of the above! Of course it is completely up to you how much or how little you would like to organize. Being organized has a plethora of benefits such as saving you time when you need to locate something, it helps you stay on top of bills, and it helps cut the clutter.

I'm a very cluttered individual-yet I'm OBSESSED with things that make organization possible.  Totes, labels, shelves, you name it.  I think it's because deep down I want to be organized-even though (or especially because of) I'm not an organized individual.  One day I will get this stuff figured out. ONE DAY.

Here are some ways to work on your organization this month:
  • Quit procrastinating.  I swear I'm the worlds biggest procrastinator-but I'm going to work on fighting back each time I get that urge to put something off.  Get stuff done first = stress-free relaxation instead of anxiety-laced laziness.
  • Create a life notebook that holds all of your important papers. Things like yearly to do lists, emergency contact information, insurance documents, gift idea list, important birthdays and anniversaries, website log ins and passwords, employment history, vehicle information, school records, veterinary documents, contracts, mortgage documents, etc.
  • Dejunk your closets.  Go through your closets and pick out what you no longer wear or use anymore and put it in a donation bag/pile.  Take that bag immediately to a donation center (Goodwill, Boys & Girls Club, etc.) so you're not tempted to take things back out of it. Let it help someone less fortunate than you instead of just laying around not being used.
  • Keep your junk drawers in order with with bins for specific types of items. Bins for things like pens, random nuts and bolts, batteries, papers, etc. Minimizing the size of your junk drawer also helps keep the clutter to a minimum.
  • Create a recipe and meal-planning binder.
  • Schedule your cleaning/organizing. Spending a little time each day on something is less stressful than trying to clean everything in one day.  Make yourself a grown-up chore chart!
  • Make daily to-do lists.  Just make sure you don't overwhelm yourself-be realistic.
  • Store sheet sets in their corresponding pillow cases. This keeps everything together and in one place.
  • Take advantage of vertical space.  Add vertical shelving to walls to hold decor, books, etc.
  • Keep items such as nail polishes, spices, medicines, etc. on a lazy Susan.
  • Hang kitchen utensils such as measuring cups or spoons on the inside of a kitchen cabinet door. You can even add a measurement converter above or below the utensils!
  • Don’t set your mail down. Sort through it as soon as you bring it into the house and recycle what you do not need.
  • Use velcro, tape, or zip ties to keep wires together.
  • Sort the blogs you follow on Bloglovin’ or your RSS reader. Sort them into categories such as: fashion, beauty, do-it-yourself, etc.  I even have categories like A, B, C, etc. for which blogs I want to read most and which ones I get to when I can.  Also, it's OK to unfollow the ones you don't read-it'll make your life easier!
Blogging Prompts:
  • Before and After-show us how you've organized your life this month and how you did it.
  • Post an Organizational DIY Project.
  • Share your favorite Organizational/Cleaning pins and posts.
  • Share your favorite organizational apps/tips, etc.
How to participate:
  1. Link up your organizational posts and progress throughout the month.
  2. Include the button (code above) so others can join along.
  3. Visit others in the linky and show some love!

I'm also going to offer a free ad space to whoever's post I choose-so make your posts good quality so your blog/shop gets more attention.

My New Erin Condren Life Planner

Remember how last year I bought a planner and never used it?  Well I thought I'd give it a try again this year because I've been super curious about the Erin Condren Planners everyone keeps talking about.  It's a bit pricier than some of it's competitors but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out anyway.  Here's hoping I actually use it this time-and I wanted to share it with you because it's cute!  This is not a sponsored post, just an honest review as I purchased the planner myself.

I ordered the Sea Life Life Planner in Seafoam and look how cute it is! The cover is also removable in case you want to change it out with other cover options.  They're typically $10-$15 a piece, but she also sent a $15 coupon/gift card with the order!  So much fun-here's a look:

I also added on an order of stickers with my friends and family's faces to put on their birthdays-so fun!

All in all, the package arrived beautifully wrapped and filled with extras-and everything was very high quality.  I will likely order from Erin Condren again and recommend it to my friends!  So lovely!

This post is not sponsored in anyway, I just wanted to share it with my readers!

Cleaning Closets: A Personal Journey

Note: This is a post by Liz Becker-so this personal story does not belong to me, but it's a good one!

Like a lot of people, I'm guilty of collecting more stuff than I actually need.  I'm not a candidate for Hoarding: Buried Alive or anything, but my space can definitely get a little cluttered with stuff I may have needed once, but have no use for now.  It's to the point where what storage space I do have is steadily reaching capacity and, like George Carlin used to joke, I'm going to have to get a bigger house for my stuff... Or start getting rid of things.

Cleaning Closets: A Personal Journey

Making the Decision
Deciding to get rid of stuff is easy; deciding what to get rid of is another thing entirely.  The first thing I needed to do is sort through all of my stuff; but since I have three large closets, it was a lot easier said than done.

The Hall Closet
I decided to start with the large hall closet, where I store all of my holiday decorations, linens, and clothing that is either out of season, or no longer fits.  The closet was actually fairly easy.  Since I no longer host big holiday gatherings at my place, I could easily donate a lot of the decorations to charity, or give them to family members.  I had managed to get down to just the Christmas tree, a wreath, a couple strings of lights, and several ornaments that had sentimental value.

The linens were also easy-I managed to get rid of the bulk of my table cloths and napkins-giving them new homes with my kids, as well as any sheets or towels that were faded, frayed, or otherwise worn.

The clothing was a little more difficult, mainly because there were things that I keep convincing myself that I would wear again, if only I could lose that last fifteen pounds.  Once I was willing to accept that they were doing me no good gathering dust, I was able to bag them up and send them to Goodwill.

The hall closet finished, I decided to tackle the next monster: the closet in the spare bedroom.

The Spare Bedroom
The spare bedroom was a little more problematic because that was where I stored all of my fashion accessories, like my belts, scarves, shoes, and designer handbags.  These were all items that I'd spent a lot of money on, and which were still in great condition, but I just didn't use them often.

Still, each item had been selected with care, or gifted to me, and they had a certain degree of sentimental, as well as monetary value.  I couldn't just ship them off to Goodwill-these items needed special care.

I sorted them into three groups:
  • Things I loved, and couldn't get rid of.
  • Things I liked, and would like to keep.
  • Things I'd bought because they were fashionable, but if I were really honest, I didn't really like them that much.
Once I finished sorting, I returned the stuff I loved to the closet.  I decided to re-gift the things I liked to friends and family members who I thought would appreciate them.  I also started looking for places to sell designer handbags and other luxury items.

The closet in the spare bedroom done, I moved on to the last project: the closet in my bedroom.

The Bedroom Closet
I thought this closet would be the easiest of all, because it held all of the stuff I was currently using.  It turns out that I didn't regularly use nearly as much as I'd thought.  For example, I had found several clothing items that I had only worn a few times before hanging them in the back of the closet to be forgotten.

Yet, even though they had been forgotten, I had been reluctant to let them go once I'd remembered them.

Ultimately, I did manage to cull things, and either donate them or send them off to good homes, but it took some time.  After all is said and done, I now have a lot more space in my closets, and I even got a little cash from selling some of my handbags.

The Zoo & a Relaxed Weekend

Mostly my weekend was pretty relaxed without much going on, but I took the day off of work Friday to go to the zoo with Rocky.  It was nice to have a day off, I spent the morning cleaning the house and then in the afternoon we went up to Hogle Zoo.  After the zoo we hung out and watched Doctor Who, and then went to the Devil's Daughter that evening for nachos and to hang out with my friends.

Saturday I slept in and then kind of lazed about.  I wasn't feeling very well, so I didn't even leave the house.  Josh and I just ordered a pizza and watched movies. I really loved Beasts of the Southern Wild, but kept falling asleep during Zero Dark Thirty.

I was also happy to receive my order from Le Box Boutique on Saturday.  I only ordered it Thursday so it was amazing that she shipped it so fast, and it was full of fun.  I ordered some packaging supplies for my shop (I'm going to work to better present things when they're ordered) and some Washi Tape which is my new addiction.

Sunday I didn't do much, but I did get up and try to clean and organize my room a bit.  I'm trying desperately to dejunk more and get my craft/art stuff in working order.  I bought some boxes and am going to store my paper craft stuff in them instead of the giant totes I have in the closet.  Then I fell asleep watching Friends with Benefits.

I also decided to change the ring I've worn every day for the last year or so.  I've been wearing moonstone which brings change and healing, and now I'm wearing Tourmilinated Quartz instead.  It's said to help energy, relieve tension, block detrimental environmental elements, and help stop self-sabotage (which I am very good at.)  It's also very pretty to look at, which makes me happy.

I've also recently decided to start paying attention to beauty regimens.  So I tried my hand at a mud mask last night, and it was pretty cool! I love this Clean-Up Mud by Montagne Jeunesse.  It's full of all this natural stuff like Aloe, Willow, Mediterranean Clay, Rosemary, Evening Primrose, and Witch-hazel   I love when my products are natural, and I will definitely be using their products again.  I have two more at home to try.

I'm happy to announce that the giant Bloglovin giveaway will go live at Midnight tonight-or technically tomorrow I guess-and there are over $300 in gift cards! I'm so excited! So come back and enter!

What are you happy about today?
