Saturday Spotlight: Meet The Good Witch of the Midwest

Hello friends!  For today's Saturday Spotlight I have the brains behind the blog The Good Witch of the Midwest.  She's a small blogger who I've chosen to feature here on the blog in order to help promote her so she can grow and find new readers.  If you'd like to be featured here, please fill out this form.

But let's get on with the interview-I've asked her a few questions so you can get to know her better:

Saturday Spotlight: Meet The Good Witch of the Midwest

How did The Good Witch of the Midwest get started?
I wanted a platform mainly for my love of polish. But I'm also a photographer and an avid (albeit, amateur chef) so the pictures and recipe tutorials just fell into place with all the polish and pretties. I love having somewhat of a digital diary to share my passions with others.

What inspires your love of nail polish?
When I was in eighth grade, my favorite teacher was my sounding board for all things. I called him Sir, as a nod to my favorite movie of the time (and song) To Sir With Love. I asked him one day what guys really notice first in a girl. He said one of the first things he noticed about his wife was her nails. They were always well manicured and painted and always looked good. From then on I was hooked on polish, even though my dad wouldn't let me wear it. After my parents split I bought my first bottle of polish for $6... An Urban Decay polish that was navy blue with silver sparkles. My absolute favorite polish ever. Plus, I love that my polish can change with my moods. If I'm dark and stormy, my nails will be too. If I'm in a great mood, looking forward to having a great time, my nails are a conduit.

What are your favorite things to write about on your blog?
My life. It may not be much to some, but to me, every life experience that I have could help someone else. I wrote about loosing our house, finding a new one and making it ours just so people wouldn't be so scared of the change themselves. Last night I blogged a series of recipes celebrating my mother-in-law that passed away hoping that someone might be able to honor their loved one the way I honored mine. I also love sharing my pictures. Whether they are just of flowers, or lightning (which I haven't had the chance to get this year *sad panda*), conceptual shots or just shots of my kiddos, I love to share and hopefully bring a smile to someones day.

Who inspires you in your daily life and why?
My children inspire my daily life. They're one of the main reasons I'm here on this earth. They keep me going when I don't want to walk another step and always keep me on my toes.

What are a few of your favorite posts you've posted on your blog?
Hmmm... The one where I made my famous Baklava. Ugh I can't wait for the holidays. My DIY River Song journal which I still use to this day... One of my favorites is a glimpse of what I do on a typical day, which took my readers to Neewollah, the nations oldest Halloween festival. And shoots of my beautiful town in full fall swing.. Ok... That's it. I have way too many favorites LOL

If you could give one piece of sound life advice, what would it be?
My motto has always been: Let what happens, happen. It's easier said than done. I am a huge worrier. I can't help it, but I try to. I try my hardest to just breathe and let it be. If a situation is too heavy for you to handle at the moment, back up... Take a few steps back and breathe. Then come back at a different angle and attack it the best way you know how with a clear head.

Don't forget to visit The Good Witch of the Midwest and say hello!

12 DIY Bathroom Projects I'm Dying to Try

You may remember when I first started looking at houses I shared a list of the 15 DIY Kitchen Projects I was dying to try in my new home.  Things have changed a bit since actually buying a house and having a different space to work with, so I may update that one eventually.  However, today I'd like to share some Bathroom projects I want to try.

My house has two bathrooms currently, one upstairs that is mostly updated (though they did a terrible job when they did it) and a downstairs bathroom which I'm afraid might be a lost cause.  It's so awful I don't even know how to fix it, but I'll talk about that at another time.  For now, here are some projects I've collected for you from Pinterest, enjoy!

12 DIY Bathroom Projects I'm Dying to Try

1. These Window Box Bathroom Storage Bins would be perfect for holding towels and other things in a bathroom with limited space.  They're small, and they'd fit against the wall or cupboards somewhere to help conserve floor space.

2. Neither of my bathrooms have toilet paper roll holders.  I bought a free standing one, but I'm kind of liking this toilet paper roll holder with a shelf tutorial.  It's not only adorable, but it would be useful too!

3. I found this super basic 2 minute tutorial for a magnetic strip that holds things like bobby pins or tweezers.  I'm forever losing all of those things, so this would be handy!  It's not cute, but I think it would be super easy to make it cute with some thin fabric or washi tape, don't you think?

4. I totally adore these mason jar bathroom organizers.  And how easy is strapping a few mason jars to a board and filling it with your bathroom things like sponges, makeup brushes, Q-tips, etc.?

5. If you have the floor space (I don't, at least not upstairs) an old ladder is a super cute towel holder!

6. Bathroom mirrors can be super boring, but not when you frame your mirror!  Adding some simple molding, an old picture frame, or some mosaic tile around your bathroom mirror will add a lot of charm to that part of your bathroom.

7. Two things you can never get enough of in a bathroom is mirrors and storage.  How about building your own bathroom mirror storage case?  It gives you a nice full length(ish) mirror to admire your outfits in, PLUS the added benefit of storage behind it.  Brilliant!

8. You can totally snag this FREE pattern for this soft knit bath mat from Coco Knits.  Cute!

9. This narrow rope shelf is totally doable, and adorable too!  Plus, you can totally adjust the lengths and widths as needed for your space!

10. I didn't even think about using the space above the door by installing an above door shelf. Usefull!

11. This DIY magazine storage takes up almost no space, and looks so easy to install! It's cute too.

12. Uh, did you know you can turn a drawer into a bathroom shelf and that it's easy?  SO cute.

What projects do you want to do or have you done in your bathroom?

What to Wear on a Dream Date

What to Wear on a Dream Date

Deciding what to wear on your dream date you were looking forward to a long time, might be difficult sometimes. Oh hell, who I am kidding? It is always super hard and takes a lot of thinking too. Is that dress appropriate? Do those shoes match my nail polish color? These and other questions usually come to my mind then I stand in front of my closet thinking about the date, the venue, and the man I am meeting. But you know what, after some time of such problem-solving, I have finally managed to make myself a tips list of items that are suitable to wear on a date. Let me share it with you, and may you relax for once before the big date night with your crush.

A Skirt or A Dress
Little cute dress or a combo of a nice skirt and a blouse is very appropriate and even necessary for a date! Even if you are one of these girls, who like to wear pants all the time, consider pulling a dressy skirt or a dress for your date. Pants, as the history of fashion tells, were initially men’s apparel item, so some men might think that pants are too masculine for a girl. You don’t want that to happen, right? So better get yourself into a dress or a skirt (which both are not to short – you don’t want to look too sexy), and create a feminine vibe. Of course, don’t wear a too long skirt as well. That is how you create a nun vibe. A medium length skirt or a dress combined with not so deep neckline will do the trick for sure!

Heels
If you still want to wear pants, then wear it with some hot and super stylish high heels. It will also help you to create a feminine look and will improve your pose as well! Of course, you need to know how to walk in heels, in another way you just look silly. Sure, you toes and legs might hurt after a date, but if you want to wear ballerina flats or boots, you will lose that sexy vibe which you should want to have. Let’s be honest. Just find heels which are at least comfortable for you, and you will notice the attention to you from your date right away!

Bright Clothing
Now if you have decided to pull a nice dress and heels, you also probably have started to think about the color palette too. Well, definitely choose some brighter colors then! Black, gray and other neutral colors are more suitable for a working environment, but not for a date. Well, black might be good for such occasion, but heels and all accessories should be brighter. On the other hand, turquoise and coral shades actually seem to be particular favorites for many men, so you can dress yourself in it as well. But don’t follow that blindly, and choose a color that looks the best with your skin and hair complexion. Otherwise, put a hot red dress to create strong and romantic look.

Now, before the big night, you need to shop for all the items I just mentioned, right? Just relax and don’t rush to the next retail store. Better get online and visit Neiman Marcus. Over there you will be able to equip yourself for the night out and save money with Online Coupons for Neiman Marcus! It will cut any price and will let you be sure, that your purchase will make your crush fall in love with you the moment you walk in. Good luck!

Confessions of a New Homeowner Part 3: Moving Woes

Drinking a Uinta PUNK'N Beer

I confess... I'm exhausted.  No joke-I've worked on the house a ton still and I'm not sleeping well yet in the new space.  It'll get there, but it'll take some time... Also, I'm ready for Fall now. I want pumpkins and cool air and Halloween.

I confess... I'm lucky for all the help I've had.  Moving day rolled around and I was a mess.  I'd been up and packing for 36 hours straight when my little sister called me to see how I was doing.  I started crying, and then I threw up.  I'm too old to go without sleep.  So my mom called in sick to work and beat the boys to my apartment so she could help me just throw the rest of the stuff in boxes.  Then my brothers and my grandpa showed up and helped me move.  I couldn't have done it without them. Now if only I could find the bolts and screws to put my bed back together...

I confess... Appliances have been an interesting experience.  I'd started out looking for used appliances and after a lot of hunting and looking at (gross) used appliances, I decided to just buy new and get the warranty.  I knew I needed a front-loading washer and dryer due to the fact that they're up on a platform in the bathroom (and I'm too short to reach all the way in top loaders even when they're on the regular ground!) and I wanted a fridge with ice and water-since I already have a waterline hooked up.  So I found myself at Home Depot while they were having a 10% off sale and a 6-months no interest promotion, and I bought myself this Samsung side-by-side refrigerator and also a Samsung front-loading washer and it's matching dryer.  The dryer sings to me.

I confess... I had no idea that you had to measure things like doorways.  I just thought doorways were pretty standard.  I was so wrong-and I paid dearly for it.  After waiting a week for delivery, and then all day (because they were late), the delivery men showed up and started measuring.  The fridge would go through the front door, but not the back door or the door to the kitchen.  There was no way around it and it had to go back and I had to start the process of fridge shopping all over.  I finally decided on this Whirlpool side-by-side

I confess... While the washer and dryer did fit (barely-it was touch and go there trying to get past the water heater) they were also unuseable at first.  Home Depot sold me a crappy dryer vent and the delivery guy said I needed to go back and get a flexible one.  Also, since my drain for the washer is up in the wall, and the washer door only opens one way, the drain hose from the washer doesn't reach at all...

I confess... Once again, my family is amazing.  My grandfather came over to help me get my washer and dryer up and running, which involved helping me hook up the dryer vent and also helping me jimmy-rig the hose for the washer by caulking it to a second hose and taping it up (ghetto, but at least it works now!).  He also helped me clean up my kitchen a bit (now I can't find anything haha!) and while doing so, realized that the waterline wasn't hooked up at all-they'd just stuck the hose in there and faked it!

I confess... We ran another water hose (I now know how to do it) but the water pressure is really bad in it, and I think I'm going to have to get a plumber to look at it.  Dang.

Fridge, Washer, and Dryer

I confess... Now that I'm all moved in and back to the regular work schedule, I'm realizing that things are going to take much longer than I thought.  I think you have lofty pipe dreams when you think "I'm just going to move in and fix stuff every day until it's done!" but then you get home from work and you're tired and exhausted so all you do is eat whatever you don't have to cook (because you still haven't found your pans) and go to bed at 7pm.  Wait, that's just me?

In any case, I'm coming to the realization that everything I wanted done before the housewarming party wont be done.  Luckily I'm pretty sure my friends will understand that my house is a total work in progres..

I confess... The walk through with my old landlord went pretty well.  There wasn't much she found that she was unhappy about, but most of it was there when we moved in.  I doubt I'll get much of the deposit back since it's been 7 years, but she said she was sending something.

I confess... My realtor is still following up with the previous owners about the AC.  The day he said he was going to speak with their listing agent they showed up at my house and left me a bunch of paperwork on things in the house (like the furnace, jetted tub, etc.), and they left me a note saying how sorry they were for the big pile of garbage they left and that they thought the next neighborhood cleanup day (when the city comes around to collect large or weird garbage from your curb) was on August 31st and they'd come help me move stuff if I wanted... Nice, but they still did not leave the AC. WTF people.

I confess... I still have pretty roses coming up in my yard.  Guess I need to learn how to prune them before Winter.

Roses in my Garden

I confess... I'm feeling very poor.  I've been charging lots of things and eating out too much (since my kitchen is not in order yet) so my budgeting has been bad.  I need to get a hang of that before I actually have to start paying my mortgage.

I confess... I want a dog.  Living alone is a little spooky and I think it's time I start thinking about getting a little companion that helps me feel safer.  My yard isn't fenced yet, and wont be for a while, which would mean I'd have to walk the dog regularly and take it to the dog park instead of just playing with it in the yard.  This could be good for me exercise wise though.

I confess... I should probably wait until I get some of my house in order before bringing another living thing into it... And I'm thinking maybe I should try fostering first before making the big commitment to keeping a pooch forever.  Good thing I volunteer with an awesome rescue!

What do you have to confess this week?

Happy Blogiversary Kimi Who! + $100 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

Happy Blogiversary Kimi Who! + $100 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

Many of you probably know my good friend and sponsor Kimi from Kimi Who?.  This girl is fabulously geeky, an animal lover, and a great friend to have on your side-especially in the bloggy world.  I mean just look at this cute face (and that adorable cat!):

    Kimi from Kimi Who

Well, Kimi is celebrating her 1 Year Blogiversary-HAPPY ONE YEAR OF BLOGGING KIMI! Which is super exciting, and she's doing 7 whole days of giveaways.  I was happy to get in on some of her giveaway action, but I am also happy to take a moment and introduce you to her here on the blog today.  I asked her a few anniversary-esque questions today.

What are some of the most important things you have learned in your one year of blogging?
I have learned to be less envious of other bloggers. I spent so many years trying to do as other bloggers did because they seemed to be doing well, probably making tons of money and surely they must be famous! This year, I learned how much it costs to actually maintain a blog and while there are plenty of bloggers out there making a steady flow of cash, I realize that most of us aren't. Blogging is truly a labor of love and somewhere down the road, you probably pour more money and time into it than you ever get back.

What was the best advice you have been given during the past year?
I wish I could remember where I first read this advice, but commenting regularly on other blogs has easily been a game changer for my blog. It's been really important to me to pass that advice on to other bloggers because it has worked so well for me.

What is one thing you wish you could have done differently on your blog?
I wish I had maintained a blogging schedule. It was easy to do in the beginning because my full time job had me working stable hours where I was possible for me to consistently post certain types of content. With the constant change in my scheduled days off, my blogging became inconsistent and it definitely cost me some traffic.

Where do you see (or hope to see) your blog in five years?
I have so many great ideas that I sincerely hope to see come to life. I know that I plan to do a lot more posts about blogging and I will eventually write an e-book and offer some courses for blogging and WordPress. It's all in the hopefully not as distant future as I think it is, but definitely part of a 5 year plan!

What do you expect the next year to bring to your blog?
I suspect that in the next year, there will be a lot of posts related to buying a home and decorating it because that's where our lives will be. Hopefully that means some great tips, tricks and money saving ideas.

What is your favorite post you wrote during that year, and why?
Narrowing down 185 blog posts over the last year is definitely a challenge! I think we all lose sight of what blogging is at some point. It's putting yourself out there and really being honest about who you are. I have always wanted my blog to inspire and to touch the lives of my readers and I think that's why my post about My Tattoo and the Serious Reason Behind It is one of my favorites.

It's a very raw and very real post where I open up and share one of the darkest corners of my life. It's something I don't do too often - not even outside of my blog with friends and loved ones. Sharing that post has been a pretty big deal for me and every time I share it, I feel a little more empowered.

If you could offer one tip for a blogger just starting out, what would it be?
Be authentic. It's tempting to try to do everything like everyone else... but you really need to find your own voice and let it shine.

So as I said above, Kimi has SEVEN days of giveaways.  You can enter day 1-a $100 Amazon Gift Card below, but make sure you run over to Kimi Who for the rest of the days.  So far you can enter to win an art print from Liana Kangas, a Body Naturals bath and body set, and a Funko Princess Cadence.  Plus, make sure to check back for the rest of the seven giveaways.  All end on the 15th!  You can fill out her blogiversary questionaire HERE!

A New Simplified Ad Experience and Discount + A Giveaway!

A New Simplified Ad Experience + A Giveaway!

Offering sponsored ads on my blog (along with all the goodies I offer with those) has been such a great experience, and it's been one that is constantly growing and improving with time.  It changes with each new sponsor, each new experience sponsoring someone else, and the direction the blog is taking.

So every so often (typically once or twice a year) the ad experience here has to change too.  Now is one of those times, but it's only changing ever-so-slightly.  The emphasis of this change is to simplify the experience and offer a more well-rounded and organized experience for those who choose to support this blog and advertise their blogs/shops/companies with me.  I want to always be making it better, as there is always room for improvement.

So what changes have I made?  Read on!

    Fantastic Sponsors Section
Well I'm getting rid of the Cream & Sugar spots.  Those that currently have one be allowed to continue it until the end of the term they've paid for/been assigned, but no more will be sold.  Instead, under my main sidebar sponsors section there will only be two sizes.  A featured size of 450x300 at the top (The Coffee Date) and regular spots below it (The Espresso Shots) sized at 450x200.

This will be limiting the number of ads I provide-but that's a good thing! This ensures that my paying sponsors get a big eye-catching placement and that I am able to focus on promoting these ads more thoroughly throughout the month.

    New Cup O'Tea Spot
This is basically the Cream and Sugar spot (size wise anyway) at 450x100, however it will no longer be shown in the Sponsors section, and it wont come with extra promotion.  It's just a sidebar ad much like my swap ads (it will still have the opportunity to join the Group Giveaway), but at a cheap affordable rate.  It will be shown in the Affiliate Ads section, as I've decided to move away from most traditional affiliate advertising.

    Swap Ads
I will still be accepting regular blog swap ads, but they've been moved down in the sidebar under my "Check Out These Blogs" section.  This pulls them out of the paid sponsors section, but they'll still be treated the same as they have been previously.

Free Ads for First Timers & Small Blogs
A while back I accepted applications for free ad spots for small handmade businesses and bloggers under 300 followers.  I still have a long list of people to get through for that (I've just emailed everyone who filled out the request back in February-so if you did, check your email!), but I will no longer be offering a sidebar ad, instead I'll be scheduling them for Saturday Spotlights.  These small businesses and bloggers will have the opportunity to guest post or be interviewed, as well as combine it with a giveaway for maximum exposure.

If you are a small business or blogger with less than 300 followers that has never advertised with me before, and you would like a free Saturday Spotlight, please fill out this form.

    No More Holiday Ad Changes
I've decided in order to keep the ad experience simple and fun I wont be announcing a Holiday Hotlist Ad Setup (as I've done in previous years) with big ad changes any longer.  Instead, the ad set up that is now running will continue on as is through the holidays.  There may be an additional holiday hotlist ad in the future, but the entire set up will not change.

Free Giveaway Entries & Community Post
All sponsors in my Fantastic Sponsors section will get a free entry option (even if they're not participating) in the Group Giveaway.  That entry will be a visit with a comment or item favorite.  There will be options to purchase further entries.

I will also be bringing back my Sponsors Spotlight/Community post options with different themes accompanying the Group Giveaways each month.  Whether or not a sponsor (in the Fantastic Sponsors section) is participating, they will be included in this.

The Cup O'Tea and Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans (swappers) spots will both have the option to buy into the Group Giveaway, and if they do, they will also be included in the Community Post.

    Group Giveaway Organization
Each month will be much more organized now. I've planned out and scheduled the Group Giveaways for the rest of the year and created the forms for them so I'm ready to go right off the bat (I told you I'm getting more organized) and here are the planned giveaways so far:

    • August: Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Camera ($70 value + Accessories Allowance TBD)
    • September: eGift Card to The Container Store (Value TBD)
    • October: eGift Card to Williams Sonoma (Value TBD)
    • November: eGift Card to Etsy (Value TBD)
    • December: eGift to Erin Condren (Value TBD)
    Mega Social Media Love
All sponsors will receive 3-5 tweets a week sharing their content, and one Facebook share featuring them for the month.  I will also be pinning, stumbling, favoriting, commenting, etc.  I'm upping the Social Media game!

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Take 10% off any ad purchased in August with code SIMPLIFY at checkout

To celebrate my new ad system, I'm giving two lucky winners a free month of my Espresso Shots (450x200) ad spaces!  Yay! Open worldwide and ends on 08/18/15 at 12AM. Entering below agrees to all T&C in the widget.

I'm Not Waiting Around for a Man to Save Me

While I have had plenty of experience with dating in all of its various forms, I still consider myself having been single for the majority of my life due to the fact that I've had very few committed relationships. One thing this experience has taught me over the years is independence, and I'm glad for it.  I take care of myself, I pay my own bills, I make my own decisions (with the occasional opinion from a friend or two), I do/buy/think/say what I want, and I live how I want-and I like it.  Not having a man to rely on has taught me how to fend for myself and fight my own battles.

That doesn't mean I never wanted a real relationship or a significant other around.  I did.  I do. I will.  However, after years of waiting around in hopes that the right guy would come along-I'm not waiting anymore.  I'm doing things I never thought I'd do on my own (buy a house, for one) and it feels damned good.  I'm learning skills like patching drywall, changing locks, fixing headlights, etc.  I'm one fierce woman.

One thing it does mean is that I'm a twenty-nine year old single woman who has her shit together.  I own my own home, my own car, go to work 40+ hours a week, and I take care of myself.  There is no part of me that waits around for my "Prince Charming" anymore-I save myself.

That doesn't go just for the physical/monetary things in life either-it also covers emotional and mental well-being.  For the most part, I have all that shit together.  I battle with a lot of the same things as other people like depression (yes, even chemical) and anxiety (moderate to severe), as well as the stuff that comes along like heartbreak, disappointment, failure, self-doubt, insecurity, and devastating loss.  But you know what?  I pull myself together after each of these things and I keep trucking.  I don't let them hold me back from living my life and moving forward.  I enlist help when I need it (I see a therapist once or twice a month), I take days off from the world when I need them, but I never retreat into myself and let my life disappear for good.

I have my shit together.  A lot of people don't.  I end up dating most of them.

Sometimes I think I probably come off as a bit intimidating for some of the guys who date me. I mean, I don't mind if they buy me dinner, open my doors, fix something for me-but I don't need them to, and I wont wait for it either.  If I need something fixed-I fix it.  If I need something done-I do it.  It's just easier that way.  But some guys can't handle not being "needed" or relied on, and they run or self-sabotage.  Big babies.

Hey-I don't mind being intimidating.  It weeds out the guys I probably don't want to spend the rest of my life with anyway.  If a guy can't handle my independence, or any other part of me, I don't need him around.  You know why?  I'm single and I like it.  Someday someone awesome will come along and change that, and I'll like that too, but until then-I'm good.  I'm not going to rush into a relationship or settle just because I don't want to be alone anymore.  I hope any future guys I date are prepared for that-because it's going to take a good independent man to keep up with me too.

    This week's song
    Single
    by Natasha Bedingfield

I'm not waiting around for a man to save me ('cause I'm happy where I am)
Don't depend on a guy to validate me (no no)
I don't need to be anyone's baby (is that so hard to understand?)

The Weekly Round-Up: How to Not Suck at Blogging

Kimi Who: How to Not Suck at Blogging

"Remember that your audience took their precious time to not only read your blog, but to leave a comment on it. Have the courtesy to respond to their comments and foster a desire to continue the conversation. By responding to comments left on your blog in a timely manner, your audience will feel cared about, cherished and therefor interested in returning."

▶ Kimi from Kimi Who wrote this great post (and we have our title) called How to Not Suck at Blogging.  It offers some fairly simple tips you can apply to your blog in order to help your blog not suck.  Simple, right?

A Cat-Like Curiosity: Organisation, Facebook & Tumblr for Busy Bloggers

"as you can see, i then get a manageable list of bookmarks for me to view and click on! much easier than having to scroll for ages to find my latest bookmarks. i am trying to be more organised with the things i find online and using this method (and pinterest) i feel like i am on top of all of the cool resources i have found. yay me!"

▶ Sara from A Cat-Like Curiosity shared a great post about organizing Facebook and Tumblr for Busy Bloggers.  We're all busy bloggers, so these are some helpful tips I think we could all benefit from.

Live with Rosie: Inside My Blogging Binder & How to Make One Yourself

"I celebrated a blogiversary this past April. Usually when a blogger reaches that milestone, they do a post celebrating their hard work, their readers and reflect on the happier moments of the year. I didn’t do that. As I sat down to reflect on my year, all I could see were disorganized posts and my inconsistency. Now, I know there were some great moments as well, but I was convicted that because I was disorganized and my readers were paying the price. Back in April, I decided to get better."

▶ Chelsie from Life with Rosie shared her Blogging Binder and offered tips on how to make one yourself! Useful!

"Here’s the secret: you just need to be WHERE YOUR AUDIENCE IS! That’s it. If they are on Facebook or Bloglovin’ or the good ole IG (Instagram to old people – that includes me) then you should be on those sites promoting your brand. If your audience is not on Google+ (which I hope not, I hate G+), then why are you wasting your valuable time on G+?? Just stop it."

▶ Lizzy from Stumbling Upon Lizzy shared a fantastic post regarding where you're spending you're time promoting your blog.  She's right.  You need to be where your audience is, otherwise it's fruitless.

Confessions of a New Homeowner Part 2: Updates on The New House

You may have caught my first round of new homeowner confessions when I was freaking out.  That was exactly two weeks ago after just getting the keys to my new home and being able access it for the first time.  A TON has happened since then, and I've had a LOT of help.

Confessions of a New Homeowner Part 2: Updates on The New House

I confess... The previous homeowners left the place in quite a state.  That's one of the reasons I was freaking out when I first got the keys and was able to get in there.  There were giant holes in the walls, the place smelled like sour meat, they didn't leave the portable A/C they were required to leave, the door was hanging wide open (they didn't lock it at all), and there was a giant pile of crap they'd left me in the back yard. They'd also almost completely killed the grass in the back yard between the time I looked at the home and the time I gained access. I pretty much hate them, and each project has me cursing their names.  What jerks.

I confess... I've grown too weary of chasing down my realtor to see about the A/C unit.  I'm just giving up I think... Though part of me feels like I should call the cops or something, since they were required to leave it and the fact that they took it should count as theft.  I'll admit that I don't really need it now (I've forked over the money to buy an A/C for myself because it's hot and I couldn't wait!) but that I'd like to get them simply out of principle.

Hampton Bay 1-Light Outdoor Black Wall Light

I confess... One of the first things I did at my new place was start thinking about all the updates I had to do, and one of the first ones I did was porch lights.  They had an old ugly motion detector light on the front, and a hole with wires hanging out the back... These little lights I got at Home Depot for about $16 each, so I felt like it wasn't a terrible investment-and they add a lot of character.  So the Sunday after I gained access to the house my dad stopped by on his way out of town (for work) and helped me install a couple new lights, and also my new A/C.  He also helped me fix the front door so it would lock properly.  My dad is so great.

I confess... He's working six-twelves right now, but he said as soon as he's done with this job he'll come down and help me install some new flooring.  They self-installed some laminate in the kitchen and did a terrible job-there are giant gaps in between boards, the boards aren't secured so they slide around, and they never water-proofed or protected the flooring against water damage.

Shayla sanding down spackle while the dogs keep her company.

I confess... My mom and my sister have been amazing.  Not only did they rush down when I was freaking out to make me feel better, but they then came down again the following Sunday night to help me start making the place liveable.  They slept on the floor of my new house with me for two nights while we painted, primed, scraped, patched, and fixed the place up.  Plus we had puppy helpers. So cute!

I confess... I didn't get enough before shots, but I did get a few.  I wish I'd gotten more and taken them with my good camera so you could see just how bad some things were.  These people didn't really take care of the place at all.  It looks like they tried to do some fixes on their own, but every fix they did was done really poorly.

    Living Room Before

I confess... It's amazing how much a coat of paint can change a room.  This house is tiny with a cottage/bungalow feel, but I don't know how they survived with ugly stark white walls over their ten years there.  It had no character.  Maybe they were just cheap-I had no idea how much paint cost-it was so expensive!  Above is a few shots of the living room.

Living Room After - Sherwin Williams Sea Salt on the walls with Snowbound on the trim.

I confess... I went with Sherwin Williams Sea Salt for the walls on the living room, and the two-tone look with the molding in Sherwin Williams Snowbound.  I'm in love with it.  It makes the room feel ENTIRELY different.

I confess... It was SO difficult to paint over where the stairs are.  In the middle of painting we called my grandfather to ask if he had a tall ladder we could borrow and he rushed over with one so we could reach some awkward spaces.  It still didn't help with some of the spaces, so he built some makeshift scaffolding over the space so we could stand on it or put things on it.

    Paint spill-oops!

I confess... The scaffolding had about a foot on one side where it rested, but only about two inches on the other... When that shifts and you have a giant bucket of paint sitting on the wood-bad things happen.  My sister accidentally dropped an entire bowl of paint down my stairs!

I confess... The painting of my stair carpet resulted in a lot of tears.  All three of us were going on very little sleep, so my sister was bawling because she felt bad and I was bawling because I couldn't afford to replace the carpet that was now painted white.  Luckily my mom kept a cool head and after an hour of scrubbing with hot soapy water and running the carpet cleaner over it, we managed to get most of it out.

Painting the kitchen with Behr Planetary Silver and stripping the old paint off cupboard hinges.

I confess... For the kitchen I chose Behr Planetary Silver.  I don't know what inspired me to go with a grey, but I sure love the two-toned look with the silver-grey and the Snowbound trim.  I still have a lot to paint in the kitchen.  I also bought some pretty grey and white chevron style non-slip cupboard liners that I'll be able to put in when I finish all the painting.

I confess... The kitchen cabinets are kind of weird.  Over the sink there are the original built-in solid wood cabinets that probably came with the house in the 1950s, but somewhere along the line they've replaced the cabinets along the wall and under the sink with a cheaper version.  The replaced cabinets all have newer hinges on them, but the original ones had the original hinges with about 60 years worth of paint over it... It took two whole days to get the hinges off so we could paint.  They'd been painted over so many times that I had to buy a paint stripper, apply it, let it sit 15 minutes before scraping whatever I could get off, and then repeat-for two days.  I did finally get them off, and am currently in the process of painting them and getting new hardware for them.

Patching a hole in the kitchen ceiling.

I confess... In the kitchen there was a random hole in the ceiling that the previous owners had literally stuffed with plastic grocery sacks. Just, what?  What is wrong with these people?  I pulled the grocery sacks out and a bunch of heat rushed down.  We imagine that they must have used the hole to put in insulation in part of the attic space, but then been way too lazy to fix it-they just tried to plug it up so that the heat stayed in.  Above you'll see how they had it on the left, and on the right how I started fixing it.

I confess... I'm learning how to patch walls like a pro.  We bought mesh panels and mesh tape, and a giant tub of Joint Compound and I have patched so many holes and cracks in the walls/ceilings that it's crazy.  But it makes such a difference!

Fixing the hole between the door frame and the wall with Joint Compound.

I confess... One thing I was aware of from the moment I put in the offer was the jagged hole between the wall and door frame in the bedroom.  This door separates the bedroom from the downstairs bathroom (worst bathroom ever) and it appears as if they'd cut their own door frame.  It was all jagged and wavy, and they'd just left the whole there without doing anything to patch it.  So my momma helped me nail in a new board that was missing from the frame, and we broke out the joint compound and we started patching the door up.  It's dried kind of cracking, so I think I need to sand it down and put another layer on it.

    Scraping paint off of drywall.

I confess... The bedroom walls were bad too.  There was paint peeling everywhere (it appears they'd painted directly over drywall without primer or anything) and the molding along the one wall was damaged.  I pried up the molding and voila, found a small piece of mold.  We cut the moldy section of the wall out and tossed the old molding there.  We also spent hours hand scraping the peeling paint off the walls.

Bedroom painted with Sherwin Williams Refresh on the walls and Snowbound for the trim.

I confess... My mom and sister seriously are the best family anyone could ask for. They both had Monday off, and even though I had to work they went to my house and painted my bedroom!  I came home to an almost complete painting job that has saved me SO much time!

I confess... I originally bought Sherwin Williams Refresh to use to update the accents in the kitchen (which are already a similar-but darker-color) and ended up hating it in the Kitchen.  So I was glad that when it was done in the bedroom I LOVED it there. I'd hate to waste paint or be stuck with a color I hate.  It looked great with the Snowbound trim/accents as well.

Shayla painting the downstairs bathroom white, and getting covered in paint.

I confess... In an effort to make me hate my downstairs bathroom less, (it looked like this originally) my mom and sister helped me paint it mostly white.  It's going to need an entire overhall at some point... It's the most bizarre thing.  The main drain is up in the wall, so they've installed a pump in the floor and have pipes and wires running everywhere.  I think that it's because of all the pipes and wires and the pump that they built the weird platforms and fake walls to hide it... Except they didn't do a great job at that either-they made sliding cupboard doors that are uneven and terrible, and the platforms kind of slide around.  They didn't even have the shower secured into the wall, it can move around... But making it white helps a little.

I confess... My baby sister is pretty much the smaller, blonder, more adorable version of me.  Isn't she cute?

I confess... I am becoming extremely handy.  I'm learning how to do so many things on my own, including patching walls and hooking things up.  I'm also going to make an attempt to change my headlight on my car this weekend (I'm too house poor to take my car in lol) and I need to switch out a few electrical outlets that my dad explained how to do.  I am woman, hear me roar.

I confess... I still have SO much more to do before the house is actually liveable... I mean I'm currently bunkered down in the one room of the house that's mostly done (the living room) with my couches, TV, boxes/bags piled everywhere, and my mattress on the floor.  It's crazy! Also, about 90% of everything I own is locked in the garage currently-it's been crazy.

Here is my upcoming home improvement to-do list, at least those things I know of off the top of my head so far.
    • Finish painting cupboards and around them.
    • Hang cupboard doors.
    • Place liner in cupboards.
    Kitchen Cabinets Before
    • Finish patching the holes and painting the walls in the kitchen.
    • Figure out the kitchen table situation-my table is too big for the kitchen. lol
    • Re-caulk around the sink.
    • Figure out if I want to keep the accent color in the kitchen.
      • If yes, touch it up/repaint it.
      • If no, figure out what color to paint it instead.
    Kitchen Accent Color Before
    • Backsplash behind the stove-my mom pulled down their ghetto tin foil that they'd pasted up against the wall and painted instead.
    Kitchen Backsplash Before

    • Repaint the monstrosity that is the yellow bathroom with red accents...
    • Clean up their caulking mess in the said bathroom.
    • Replace the faucet because it doesn't actually reach the sink properly.
    • Eventually I also need to figure out why the jets in the bathtub don't work...
    Ugly Yellow Bathroom Before
    • Finish painting my bedroom.
    • Spray for bugs-there are SO many spiders!
    • Figure out how to hook up the washer and dryer properly.
    • Unpack at least my clothing.
    • Figure out what to do with the closet (which looks like this).
    • Figure out what to do with the ugly downstairs bathroom.
    • Replace the counters because they are cracked and broken.
    • Paint the hallway.
    • Find curtains for the living room and the bedroom.
    • Try and bring my poor yard back to life.
Whew, I've got a lot of work cut out for me.
