This week's song is:
Black Crow
By Namoli Brennet
There's a black dog sitting on the front porch
Chewing through his rope, just trying to get free
There's a black dog sitting on the front porch
Chewing through his rope, just trying to get free
There's a caged bird staring out the window
Staring out the window, she just wants to fly
There's a caged bird staring out the window
Staring out the window, she just wants to
Fly like everyone
Fly like we were meant to
Fly like everyone
Fly like we were meant to fly
There's a blind cat sitting on this man's lap
Sitting on his lap, yeah, she just wants to see
There's a blind cat sitting on this man's lap
Sitting on his lap, yeah, she just wants to see
There's a red fox caught inside a steel trap
Caught inside a steel trap
She wants to be free
Like everyone
Free like we were meant to be
Like everyone
Free like we were meant to be
Like everyone
Free like we were meant to be
There's a black crow sitting on a fencepost
Spreading out here wings, yeah
She knows how to fly
There's a black crow sitting on a fencepost
Spreading out here wings, yeah
She knows how to fly
Like everyone
Fly like we were meant to fly
Like everyone
Fly like we were meant to fly
Like everyone
Fly like we were meant to fly

I was introduced to Namoli Brennet's music through my Eric Himan, because she is his partner on his West Coast tour (You know, the one that brings him by my place, right? SO EXCITED!) and quickly fell in love with her music. She's indie, and her voice is rich and soothing while her song lyrics are emotionally stirring and deep.
I really love her other song Let Love In (which will have it's own post eventually, that's how much it touched me) and couldn't be posted today due to the fact that I can't find audio of it online... However Black Crow was the first song I sampled on iTunes, and the entire reason I downloaded three of her CDs. Black Crow, Until from this Dream I Wake, and Boy in a Dress.
From her Bio on her website:
Webster’s defines anomaly as a deviation from the common rule, but look a little farther and you’ll find another definition: hard to classify. And that might be the best way to describe musician Namoli Brennet. Brennet was born male and transitioned to female, but like many gender-variant types, she simply identifies as “trans”. There’s something touching and achingly poignant about Brennet’s voice – maybe it’s the sound of transgender, the experience of knowing what it feels like to be unstable, on the edge, a little hard to define. In the wrong hands that could easily turn sentimental, but with Brennet’s deft touch the songs have an edge, a rawness and a gritty realness that steers clear of typical singer/songwriter territory.
What song are you relating to this week?

Nice! Man, I can see that hippie road trip more clearly now. Maybe we should follow the band? ;)
