Writers Workshop: My Household Role

It's Thursday, which means it's time for Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop. This week the prompts were as follows:

  1. Describe a moment when you realized you and your spouse were SO different.
  2. What is your role in the household?
  3. Write about how you felt when you discovered you were lied to.
  4. Describe a hard time you gave a teacher...what would you say to them today?
  5. What is an unpleasant experience you had eating?
This time, I had a hard time picking something to write about, as none of them really seemed to apply to me. I don't have a spouse, so number one is obviously out, and not having my own household makes number two sketchy. There aren't any times I can recall where I was specifically lied to, blame that on my easy-going way of letting things go quickly, but nothing comes to mind. Teachers loved me, and all of the bad experiences I've had eating involved vomiting, and I'm really not very enthusiastic to write an entire blog on puke. Do you blame me? So for now, I'll just pick number 2 and try and run with it...
What is your role in your household?

Currently, I am living in a three-bedroom home in Layton, with about 6-8 other people on and off. I technically share a room with my ex-boyfriend Matt, but it really only holds his stuff because I sleep up there, and he sleeps on the couch. The master bedroom is occupied by Ken and Kristina, who are Matt's brother & Sister-in-law. Kaden, their 1 1/2 year old sleeps in a crib in the walk-in closet, and his sister Kailee has the room right next to mine. Every other weekend we have Devin & Hailee, (Matt's two children) who we generally put in Kailee's room on the futon, after we've given them time to fall asleep in separate rooms.

Most weekends we have a party or some sort of get-together at our place. It usually involves Ken's Saturday night brew club (which is just him and a couple of friends making homemade beer) or game night. For game night, we don't just play normal games, but strategy games. A bunch of friends come over (Josh, Max, Jon, Angel, etc.) to play Settlers of Catan, Gloom, Zombies, and anything else Max (our game master) decides to bring with him. When there isn't something specific going on at my place, I'll generally make the trek up to Josh's and spend the night, so we can have our Sunday morning breakfast ritual.

During the week, I sleep in until just before I have to go to work at 11, make it home for about a half hour for lunch, and then don't get home for the evening until 8. This is just long enough to hang out with the kids for about an hour before they go to bed. From that point I'll generally either lock myself in my room and hide away, or stay up late watching shows & movies with Matt and Kristina.

So what are my roles? Let's break them down...
  • Roommate to 3 adults and 4 children
  • Second Mommy to said adorable children
  • Friend
  • Honorary Sister & Sister-in-law
  • Ex-girlfriend
  • Occasional Hermit or Invisible person
  • Occasional Social-butterfly
  • Organizer/event planner
  • Late-night cuddle buddy
  • Bridge between groups...

How fun is that? I love my roommates, my friends, and my family (which includes the previous two groups!) They are all my family, and I love them dearly and truly feel like I have a place with them all!

  1. What interesting living arrangements. Your life certainly is never dull! I'm assuming that you are on really good terms with your ex. That is just really interesting. It was nice to read that you are easy-going, too. The world needs more people like that! Hope you have a great day!
