Cheater McCheaterson

It's been a while since I shared a good horror story from my dating life with you.  Why's that?  Partly because I think I've distanced myself ever so-slightly from getting too personal here on the blog.  I'm not sure why-but that's going to change pretty quick here.  I miss getting personal.  I miss sharing bits of my heart with you all.  Also, I think part of it is likely that I've been breaking from the dating world-though it always feels like I'm breaking from it.  The older I get the longer it takes for me to bounce back-or to care enough to try and bounce back.

I'm going to tell you the story of a liar.  This story is a good few months old at this point, but still good for a laugh.  What shall I call him?  I think we'll nickname him "Dodgy" since he was not only dodgy (as in fake as hell) but he was also British, and it's a nice UK term meaning "something shady."  He certainly was shady...

Let's go back a few weeks before it all went down.  I started getting lots of random comments and flirty messages on Facebook from this guy I used to know.  He was my manager at work years ago, and we hadn't talked or known each other outside of Facebook since late 2008.  All of the sudden I start getting "suggestive" comments and messages from him.  I knew almost instantly what he was doing by trying to hit on me without sucking it up and actually asking me out, and since I don't go for that underhanded chicken way of doing things-I just let it go.  I played dumb.  I dodged his comments.

Eventually I actually did engage him in conversation and we started catching up on previous gossip from the old days, and eventually he did tell me he wanted to take me to dinner.  He said he'd been living apart from his wife for a while and they'd decided to get a divorce.  He followed that up with a very shmoozy rendition of "I've always had a thing for you but couldn't act on it until now" flattery.  Seeing as I've been on the outs with dating, I avoided giving in for a while, but I finally relented and gave him my number.

We started texting back and forth all day long.  It was actually kind of fun to get caught up in the anticipation of the next text, and the flirting, and playing a little coy when questions of a much too personal nature were asked.  After a lot of talking he asked the inevitable "Why are you still single?  You seem so perfect!" question that we always dread.  My answer?  I make bad choices when it comes to men.  He assured me that he was not a bad choice.

Somewhere along the way he deleted me on Facebook.  Which I thought was weird, so I called him out on it and he said he'd thought I had deleted him.  We decided that it must have been an accidental deletion during some drunk texting.  It seemed weird, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

After thousands of texts and over a week of flirting back and forth, I let him know I'd be in his area on Saturday and Sunday night.  Saturday was girl's night at my friends' house, but Sunday I was free to get dinner and catch up in person.  He was all gung-ho for it and told me he'd text me the next day to let me know what time he was free, as he was picking up his kids for the afternoon earlier but wanted to get together after he took them home.

I never heard from him again.  He blocked me fully on Facebook and then never texted me again.  So I looked up his ex-wive's Facebook page and it turns out that she had just posted some family photos in July.  Family photos where he was standing there smiling next to his wife and two kids-indicitive of the fact that he had not been separated for "many months" as he had told me.  In fact, I doubt he was separated at all.  It hit me that he was probably trying to trick me into cheating on his wife with me, and that he lost his nerve and chickened out.

What a horrible human being.  His poor wife deserves something much better.  So I leave him this...

What about you?  Ever had someone try something like this with you?

  1. You're a better woman than I. I would have most certainly forwarded some messages to his wife somehow.

  2. She must know, I kind of suspected that maybe she found out and did the blocking-which I kind of hope she did.

  3. What an awful story and experience, sorry you got dragged into that without your knowledge. Best of luck in the future with dating.

  5. Wow! I haven't had it happen to me (that I am aware of), but when my friend was on a dating website she was matched with this guy -- who just so happened to be her friend's FIANCE! She called him out on it but he acted like it was no big deal for him to be on a dating website while he was engaged. Long story short, him and his fiance are still together.

  9. Sometimes, I'm afraid you're me in another body. I've been through this, except I actually dated a man for months and slept with him. He had told me he was getting divorced. I was even with him when he finally moved out of his sister's house where he had been staying after he and his wife split. I was there when he picked up keys for a new apartment. But the WHOLE thing was a crazy lie. He was still with his wife. The apartment wasn't his. He randomly didn't show up one day to take me to a doctor's appointment he'd agreed to take me to and then was MIA for several months.

Worst part? My parents LOVED him. With the exception of his extreme deception, to this day he is otherwise the favorite boyfriend of my parents that I have ever had.

I'll make you feel better tho... I dated him a second time a couple of years later. I know, right!? We were just so amazing together and I was super young at the time (I was 20... I think he was 25?). I made him show me divorce papers. I drew all sorts of boundaries. When I finally got comfortable enough for us to get intimate again, he disappeared the next day and I suddenly had a flood of MySpace (lol) messages from a girl who I found out had been dating him for the past several months that he was cheating on with me.

I don't understand people. I'm sorry you had to go through this crap. It drives me crazy when I hear someone else has had to deal with this level of deception.

  10. I usually don't have good stories but HOO BOY I HAVE A GOOD ONE.

So, I had just moved out on my own, in SLC, and was very excited. It was hard; I was baaaaaarely making bank to pay rent and had like zero furniture but none of that matters when you're a young beautiful free single woman free to take on all the males in the city. Well I was on POF and some other dating sites and met a young man who was, a few years younger than me. I was about 23 and he was 21. I typically say no to younger dudes.

But, he was in the Air Force at Hill and lived in Layton and drove the sexiest car ever. I have no idea what kind of car it was but it was loud and fast. We hung out a few times and he was really great actually! We started dating and became an item pretty fast, which you know is rarely a good idea. BUT anyhow. He would always come stay with me. The one time I visited him in Layton we stayed at a friend's house. The lucky thing is that I fell asleep before we had a chance to get sexual which is nice due to what I found out later. Anywho, I liked him too much to press the subject of why I couldn't visit his house, for all I knew he lived in barracks. He sort of insinuated he was just couch surfing as military guys do sometimes. I liked that I could cuddle with him and sleep. It was nice.

Same as with you--he kind of dropped out of nowhere. Stopped texting. Stood up my friend who was meeting him to pick up a couch for my bare apartment. Literally disappeared. Never said one word. I think I did the angry "well fuck you then" text message about a week after that.

A year after this (with no mention of him at all other than I saw he'd made an okcupid, snuck on my page, then deleted his account) Google Plus became a thing that existed. It put all my email contacts into my circles and lo and behold there was Christopher. His profile stated he had been married for 5 years (!!!!!) and had THREE KIDS. The very youngest was older than our meetings had been. I was horrified; I went on nice dinner dates, tore up the roads in the fast car, and laid in bed and made out with/cuddled with a man who I thought was a young single military bro, but who was a husband and a dad. I was sickened.

So just be lucky you never actually hung out with him!!! It's a gross, gross feeling.

  12. Ugh! Why do men suck so much?

  13. Oof! You are so much better without him! I can't imagine! I've gone out with some icky guys, but never had anything like that happen.

  14. Oh my gosh, glad you escaped him unscathed and did inadvertently become "the other woman". :) Loved all the gifs. You have such a talent for telling a story.

  15. Thank you, you are so sweet! It was a crazy story, and I'm glad I didn't get further involved too.

  16. So disgusting. I wish people could just be real, instead of some of them being fakers and cheaters.

  17. Oh I wish I knew. I think if I ever figured that out I'd probably win a Nobel Peace Prize or something... lol

  18. Yuck, that's awful! I wish there were less d-bags out there like these two!

  19. Ugh, the one boyfriend my paren'ts really liked was the one who cheated on me with like everyone... The one I talked about here: http://www.mysocalledchaos.com/2010/04/stunned-shocked-appalled.html

    Isn't that crazy? Ugh.
