Do you want the totally honest truth?
It's not true.
Shhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone.
Somewhere along the path of growing from a child to an adult I've created an act. I've created this character that I can switch to when I don't want someone to see the real me hiding underneath. You know, that part that is sensitive and affected by everything? To be completely honest, I feel everything, and I feel it very strongly. Being empathetic doesn't help either. Not only do I feel all of my own emotions, but I am able to read the emotions of others as well. If someone I care about is hurting, I hurt too. I can ache with someone if they're aching, and I can cry for someone when they're incapable of allowing themselves to do so.
I'm sensitive. Things affect me, and things imprint themselves on me forever. I don't forget people, and I never forget how I felt for that person, even if that feeling changes. Love comes easily, and falling in love happens more often than it should... Granted, I do bounce back from things really quickly, but that does not mean they haven't left scars on me that I will carry for the rest of my life.
The world says feeling like this is a bad thing. People tell me I should try harder not to fall so quickly, and that I should distance myself emotionally from things.
Sometimes I wonder if they're all right.
But you know what?
I like the way I am.
I like that I feel things, and that the world touches me so deeply on so many levels. The idea of being numb and unaffected scares the hell out of me. Who would want to live that way? It doesn't make sense to me that anyone would want to disentangle themselves from the world in such a way; especially where I want so badly to immerse myself in it all.
I want to feel and experience the world through the eyes of sensitivity and love. I long to ache and rejoice with the world, and with those I love.
So yes, I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way.
I had been planning on writing about this song for a while, but hadn't gotten around to it until now. This blog was brought to you today by Mama Kat's Writers Workshop, and inspired by Le Musings of Moi.

"The idea of being numb and unaffected scares the hell out of me." GREAT LINE!
ReplyDeleteps-I saw Jewel in 1995 at a small place in Boston. A year or so before she won the grammy.
feeling can hurt- but it's good. And it's good to feel with your friends. It comforts them.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great post. Yes, I think that society wants us to not feel, but feelings are real. People are real. Stay true to who you are!
ReplyDeleteBeautifully said.
ReplyDeleteI think you can figure out when it's safe to show your sensitive side, and when to bring out that "tough girl" exterior as a defensive posture.
ReplyDeleteLoved the post.
I feel the same way...when someone I love is hurting it seriously disturbs me. Don't you wish you could just put everyone in a bubble??
